First Nerve Conduction Test
 

I found this forum googling for info on nerve conduction tests. I had my first tests last week on my lower limbs and this week on my uppers. I had strange emotional after effects and have been trying to find info on the test. I am a diabetic type II for 15 years, a former smoker (smoke free since 2001), and have had coronary artery bypass surgery in 2001 and carotid endarterectomy in 2007.

I've had nerve conduction tests, both lower and upper. I had my first one on my arm in my late twenties (for a condition that resolved on its own). At the time, I didn't understand the test other than knowing the doctor zapped me with electric shocks and it hurt like heck. It exacerbated my symptoms for a few days, and I did have some bad dreams for a short time, but both went away with no lasting (or even longterm) ill effects.

I had my second one on my legs a few years ago as part of a general work-up when I developed peripheral neuropathy. That one was uncomfortable, but only during the test itself—no after effects—and I understood what was going on, why it was necessary, and it was no big deal.

In retrospect, I think the bad experience of the first one was due mainly to my own fear of the unknown (and a doctor who was lousy at communicating :rolleyes: ).

I do not personally recall having things done beforehand as the site mentions. I just know that it was not pleasant. The person doing the test can also be the reason for the unpleasantness. Many say it hurts and others it does not so much. It just depends on lots of things IMO.

I did not have one but was recommended for one. Comp denied it. I have heard that it could be painfull. I have RSD in my right leg so I'm not sure if it would be good for me to do.

I have had 3 nerve conduction test done in a year period on my lower limbs. The only thing I experienced was pain in the muscles like I had been working out for the first time in my life. That lasted for about a week. Never experienced any other side effects.
