DBS Removal

Anyone ever had this procedure. Just curious if it has ever been done. Since DBS eliminates some/all other options and trials it would seem to me you should have the option to remove it. Assuming a better option becomes available for treatment.

Removal has the potential I think to be a bit too risky so I don't think there's anyone who actually had the hardware removed but again I'm just guessing
But by switching it off everyone concerned could pretend it wasn't there and participate.

Just wondering if it has ever been done. Theoretically it would be no more dangerous than the the initial surgery.

Main reason for asking was the policy of most trials that you cannot participate if you have DBS. I am leaning towards DBS as early as I can get it, but would like the option of removal if one of the more promising experimental treatments breaks through.

My understanding, from my neurosurgeon and neurologist, is that DBS CAN be removed. That is why it is a better option than thalamotomy or palidotomy as those procedures actually destroy brain tissue and are, therefore, not reversible.
