Sumatriptan/Imitrex reaction

Any experiences/insight out there for how to balance MG and migraines without getting yourself killed in the process?

My doctor prescribed Sumatriptan to help with recently recognized migraines. One came on last night, I took the rx and it really helped the migraine and quickly. Unfortunately, I got the crap scared out of me because I reacted badly to it. Feeling weak from the MG already, within minutes of taking the Imitrex my throat felt like it was collapsing, my tongue started tingling and my body felt flushed. Fortunately, it only last about 30 minutes, during which I was praying and wondering if I should go to the ER. I tried to calm myself down and just fell asleep instead - felt so trapped. Being alone in the house with my 9 year old, wondering if my throat is about to close up completely, and too weak to do much was very frightening.

That drug can definitely make you feel funny, or well bad.. i haven't had a migraine in almost a decade, but used tried all of the triptans - none worked even a little, (would just do excedrin migraine and have to deal with it - vomiting and blind with the aura for 3-4 hours).. They can cause some tight chest pain, that flushed feeling etc... that was before I had any neuromuscular issues.. I always would drink caffine, as that helps the headaches.. and can help MG too! :) Good luck!

I use Imitrex a couple to several times a month. I've felt the chest tightness but never what you describe. Was this the first time you've used it?

Maxalt-MLT works quite well for me.

I especially like it because (as its name implies) - it melts in your mouth.
I have had no side effects with this RX.

So easy to take.
Water is not necessary.
It is not another BIG pill to swallow.

To be effective, you must take it as soon as you "feel" the migraine coming on.

Only drawback is that insurance limits the amount that can be prescribed per month.

 Sorry about your problems with migraines and MG.
Not fun..................
