General numbness

A good friend of mine told me that he has a problem which his doctors can't figure out. He describes it as

a generalized numbness (proabably involving a lot of neuropathy) which has affected my balance and sensation in the lower half of my body. The doctors at Brighan's and etc.had no idea what was wrong and sent me home.

He had MRI's and Cat scans and still the doctors are clueless. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing happening to someone they know? Perhaps someone here has had this happen to them?

Numbness is certainly characteristic of both certain kinds of peripheral and central nervous system neurological disorders (from something like multiple sclerosis or stroke to something like spinal cord or nerve root compression), but it may also stem from circulatory problems or other sources.
