b12 and dehydration
anybody else experience this?
i've been on 1000 mcg for about a week, maybe a bit longer. noticeable bowel problems and my lips are very dry lately. i've always taken a daily multi mineral/vitamin. it's label reads 18mcg and 300% daily value for b12. now i'm concerned that i'm overdosing on b12. I know that my body should expel excess b12 but 1018mcgs is way over the recommended. it's water soluble and I think my body may be using too much water trying to get rid of it. i'm thinking I should stop. in fact I will stop and see what happens. the last thing I need is added stress on my body.... p.s. I'm very careful about drinking enough water. |
Nope.... do not worry. Yes, it is water soluble but it is not absorbed well. If you have intact intrinsic factor (which many people don't), it has a biological limit, and also the transcobalamin in the GI tract that takes the intrinsic factor complex with B12 from food (about 2mcg limit), into the blood stream. B12 is NOT like drugs or other things.
Studies have shown that 1000mcg of B12 ... leads to an average of 13mcg absorbed. The rest goes out thru the GI tract into the stool. In fact the bile excretes excess B12 also into the GI tract. Some will go out the kidneys, but that is less of an issue. Don't worry about it. Here is my B12 thread.... the details are there. http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/thread85103.html One of the main reasons I stay on NT and donate my experience and personal time is so that people will have access to medical information, to make these decisions. |
