Hand Pain (from TOS)

Hi People!

I am trying to figure out if my hand pain is related to TOS.

My pain can be characterized as deep aching, throbbing feeling mostly on the tops of the hands, up to the start of the fingers, just past the knuckles. The pain is fairly constant with severe flare-ups. They sometimes feels cold and soaking in warm water makes them feel better.

If you have hand pain from TOS -- could you please describe your symptoms?

Would really *really* appreciate it....

My TOS was caused by repetitive type work.
I would get sharp cramps in the backs of my hands for quite awhile. Later the pain & tightness moved to my wrists and elbows eventually joining up with my neck and shoulder pains.

Being off work, with good PT, very good chiro & self care reduced the chronic tension/tightness that was a large part of my pain and symptoms.
Tightness from the upper body can often cause sx down the line..

Yes I have hand numbness more than pain, but sometimes if I overwork it there is pain and it hurts to write. if your pain/numbness is in your pinky and third finger that is a sign of TOS.

I had hand pain as well. It hurt to write and I felt cramping in my fingers. It always felt like my knuckles had to be cracked. The pain has subsided on both my surgery side and my non surgical side. I have been doing therapy daily at home.

Thanks for posting. I also feel alot of tension/tightness/cramping around the knuckles. I even made sure to get tested for arthrities or RA - but it came back normal.

Are you doing therapy specifically for your hands? Or, is it more general TOS therapy?

Hi. Pre tos surgery I was having deep aching pain in outside wrist hand n up past the knuckles of the last 2fingers along with numbness. Nowx6 wks postop this pain has been so much worse since 1wk postop. Also developed new numbness of entire hand w burning fingertips n all my forearm is numb which wasn't bf surgery. Not to mention the increase I upper arm, chest, neck, back & scapula pain. I'm hoping things will calm down next 2 wks. I am also dealing with severe arthritis pain in thumbs, hips, knees, one big toe. I'm sure this colder new England weather is making me worse! I should hop on plane to LA for few mos. but last time I did that I ended up in Torrence ER.
I could use a few prayers
Good Luck with ur healing!

16rHonda -- thanks for contributing to the post. So sorry about your post-op symptoms. Don't get discouraged.... 6 weeks post-op is not long and it can take a while for things to settle down, after such a big surgery. I hope you are in contact with your doctor and also taking some nerve pain meds. I used neurontin and lidocaine patches for some post-surgery nerve pain I had...
I wish you much improvement over the next few weeks - will be thinking of you.
take care of yourself!

This is actually a newer symptom for me. It started a few months back, probably when I was overdoing something. If I didn't have TOS, I'd think I had arthritis in my knuckle and the bone before your finger starts. My all-important middle finger is most effected .

It's always worse in the morning, but after I do cardio and my morning TOS routine it usually dissipates. I'm optimistic it will pass soon as it's becoming more and more intermittent, not daily.

After the onset of symptoms, I hyper-extended it one day moving some laundry to the dryer and it sent a neuro shock directly to my BP on the right side. This confirmed my suspicions that it was just another TOS gift.

I had surgery and a lot of therapy. I continue daily with exercises and hand pain is gone on my left side (surgery side). I still occasional pain on right, but nothing like before I started therapy.
