Rsd in teeth
 

I been having extreme pain in my tooth for the past few days and went to my dentist today to see what was going on. She said that she took an xray and told me it wasn't infected but was dying. This is the second tooth since I've had rsd that has died on me. The first one was pulled last year because it got infected. I asked her to pull this one too, but because of all the dry sockets I got from the first tooth pulled, she thought it would be better to see an endodontic root canal specialist and try to save the tooth. She was concerned that my rsd could spread if I had another tooth pulled. She said that she thought that the rsd is attacking the nerves in my teeth and killing them. She said she's been studying rsd since she heard about it from me. She then sent me tonight to the endodontic dr because I couldn't wait another day to have my root canal done.
The pain was so bad. He confirmed my tooth was dying after taking another xray and that a root canal would be better than pulling the tooth. He told me in so many words that the rsd could still spread after a root canal, but there was less of a chance than if it were pulled. I said to do the root canal and I said that I would take my chances. I couldn't live with this pain, and felt I had not choice. He started the root canal and took the nerves out of the dying tooth after numbing my mouth with three shots of novacaine. That's on top of the shot my dentist gave me before I went to see him. My mouth is really sore, but the pain is not nearly as bad now thank goodness. I still have to go back two more times to finish the procedure but am glad I did it. I also am glad I have such excellent dentists and endodontics. They were so caring treated me right away. I just wanted to share my story, because I never knew that rsd could attack the nerves in the teeth. But I guess it makes sense. It it a nerve disorder. Plus the fact that I've never had teeth die until after I got rsd. Well, I hope you all have a better night than I did, and a better day tomorrow. Take care.

Now that really breaks my heart for you! I've had my share + with dental issues nevermind the RSD/CRPS. I've taken excellent care of my teeth but doesn't seem to matter.
Dental pain is some of the worst because of eating, drinking, talking etc.
Does the RSD feel the same in your mouth as your arm etc? I mean the burning, searing pain and the sharp stabbing pain and what about excessive swelling?

It was a deep aching pain that went right down to the root of my teeth and the jaw of my mouth. It wold come in waves of pain that came closer and closer and made me feel like my head was full of pressure and was going to explode. I didn't get a burning sensation though. And I had swelling in my cheek, but not excessive. It was more internal inside the root of the tooth and inside the jaw than external.

I felt like I was hit by a truck after the novacaine wore off last night, but finally got to sleep after taking some extra pain meds. My tooth and gums are very sore today, but I don't have that intense throbbing aching stabbing pain that I had yesterday thank goodness. I can live with the soreness because I know hopefully it will eventually go away.

So glad to read the pain is better for you today!

I was wondering if you have issues with dry mouth from the meds? I remember being warned sharply to keep my mouth moist by purchasing liquid saliva or chewing sugar free gum, so that this would not cause problems with my teeth. My doctors ARNP said she had seen many people lose teeth quickly due to this side effect.. so sad on top of everything else!

Don't forget to keep that salt water handy today :)

Hope you are getting some relief today Renee. I developed RSD in my face after biting a rock (in my food at a restaurant) and having so much dental work done. I have had root canals since and didn't have any issues develop from them.

Tessa has a good point with the meds causing dry mouth, definitely something to think about...

I do take some meds that I think cause dry mouth. That's a good point. I'm sure that's not helping my teeth. I have some sugar free gum, so I'll try that on the good side of my mouth. Thanks for reminding me about the salt water too. My mouth is pretty sore and I'm trying to just eat soft foods today. I hope you're doing okay and thanks again for your:hug: advice and caring.

I do feel better today. My mouth is sore but it doesn't throb like it did yesterday. That was just awful. I haven't had any root canals done after I got rsd until this one, but I did have a tooth pulled after I had rsd and the worst thing that happened from that were some dry sockets. So hopefully, this root canal won't cause any rsd spread in my face. Thanks again for caring and I hope you feel better soon too with your health problems. XyliMelts for dry mouth

I don't know why I didn't share this in my original post.. I use something called XyliMelts to alleviate dry mouth from all the meds, which is way worse for me at night. They are terrific as they slowly melt in your mouth by adhering to your gums or teeth until they dissolve. I was skeptical at first whether or not they would work and stick as mentioned by my pharmacist but low and behold they work wonders and I don't even notice I have one in my mouth. They a slightly minty almost like a wedding mint and I love minty anything so that is good for me :) worth a shot and much easier on your jaw than chewing gum. The down side is that they are kind of spendy at $8 box for 40 of them which last a month or a little more.

Thanks Tessa, I will give that a try. If it helps me to minimize my dental visits it will be well worth it. I did feel better last night too. My mouth is still sore, but not like it was. It seems to be feeling a little better everyday thank goodness and I slept pretty good last night. I hope you have a good day today. Take care.

Glad you're starting to feel better now Renee. I've got a complete phobia about dentists, so couldn't even bring myself to read this thread for several days...:rolleyes: I worry about this side of the CRPS more than any other I think.

I'm glad they managed to sort out your tooth, and hopefully everything will settle down now. Take it easy for a few days though.

I chew sugar free gum a few times a day to stop my mouth getting too dry, but I'll look out for those XyliMelts if they have them here in the UK, or something similar lol.
