Colonoscopy prep
Yesterday I got my packet of info from the GI doctors office about the prep and everything. It aint like it used to be:eek: He uses a different laxative drink called MoviPrep, I have this strict diet I have to adhere to for one week prior, has to be very low fiber, no fruits with skins or fruits, specific grains, beans, etc. I have to cut out different medicine also for that week. I have to stop my fiber tablets!!!! What am I going to do to have a BM??? I also have to stop my vitamin for the whole week because it has iron in it. Also stop my aspirin for the week. The prep is supposed to be a low volume prep, I'm not drinking a gallon of the solution like the last one I had eons ago. I googled it to see what this stuff is and it said that people with low blood sodium should not take it:eek: So I guess I need to use my script to have that checked tomorrow so my PCP can get the results back to make sure I can take this stuff. I wonder how many people google a prep and see what it is. Plus not everyone knows what low blood sodium is.
I can't eat my crunchy peanut butter:mad: It does say I can have a lot of eggs though. So I do like that but I'm not sure my cholesterol will. I do try to limit that to 2/week. |
I just did the Moviprep preparation in September (I think). I call it Satan's Cocktail. I did not like that prep at all. I had done triliyte or something like that before and liked it much better. Yeah, I had to camp out in the bathroom but I didn't have the lower abdominal cramps with it like I did the Moviprep. I know they say drink it cold but I found I could tolerate it better at room temperature. Also, it doesn't take as long to start working. If I remember correctly, it took about 1/2 hour to start working for me.
Sticking to a low residue diet will help you on the day of the prep as well as having a clean colon so you don't have to do a redo. I was already on a low residue diet due to the diverticulitis so sticking with that diet was easy for me. I ate lots of potatoes (mashed and whole), soups, puddings, etc. that week. I'm not sure about the sodium question. I would talk to your dr about it and see what he suggests. You may need to increase your sodium intake prior and/or during your prep. Good luck with all of this. Let us know how things go.:grouphug: |
Oh, applesauce, canned pears, apple or pear juice will help you have a bm during the prep week. Canned pears work great for me for constipation, better than colace.

Can I ask u about your low blood sodium ?
Sorry.....don't mean to change the subject but very curious about the low sodium. My mother seemed to go pretty 'crazy' about 4 years ago and her sodium got to like 119. I had her admitted to the hospital and as soon as they started giving her sodium through an IV (they actually stood there and pressed on the bag to get it in her system asap) she got much, much better....Her mind cleared up almost immediately. My daughter said she acted drunk when her sodium was low. My mom doesn't remember any of it.
That was the first we had heard of low sodium. She is now on Lasix and sodium tablets 3 or 4 times a day (can't remember) and her sodium is staying at around 132 to 135 which is normal. Just wanted to share. U are the first person I've seen to have the same thing. Most people have sodium that is 'too' high. Our local drug store has to order the sodium tablets just for her.....no one else around here uses them :) Thanks, Debi from Georgia (I suffer from SFN) |
I'll add to the distraction-I was told also to increase sodium by electrolyte drinks like propel or gatorade. I looked at my latest labs and it's high-normal. My cardiologist suggested it due to fluctuations in heart rate.
Hope you get the answers needed! |
Debi from Georgia, that is a very low sodium level, really low. Mine wasn't that low. there are different causes for sodium imbalances, google them and you will get loads of info. One of the tests that were drawn today was cortisol level. I used to know all about that when I was in nursing school but not anymore! Hopefully nothing caused it but restricting my diet to much. I will find out tomorrow when I call the doctors office.
Thanks for all the info about MoviPrep, I had never ehard of it. My husband was scheduled for a colonoscopy by another geoup of doctors and they used Miralax and Dulcolax. His had to be cancelled because they were asking him to stay off one of the medicines he is required to stay on for 36 days after his stent/heart attack. I didn't appreciate the office saying that he had to do that and I made sure my PCP had me go to another doctor group for mine. |
not sure, but this may be an option you want to advise your MD of- my GI doc learned of it after doing plenty of research:
Put enire bottle of Mira-Lax into bottle of lemonaid flavored gatorade and shake like crazy. Drink one full glass every hour until bottle is empty. No cramps, no crazy hobble/run to bathroom. Leaves you clean as a whistle and regulates electrolytes, minerals etc I admit this is my favorite way to do a prep. *I also have chronic low sodium and potassium drama, for no known reason; often have to take Rx to get out of danger zone |
Just jumping in w the "chronic low sodium" group. Mine is caused by drinking free water (plain water). This should be regulated by the body but Tegretol, in some cases, causes SIADH- Syndrome of Inappropriate Anti-diurectic Hormone. Increasing my salt intake would just increase blood pressure. Instead, the treatment is to reduce free water intake.
Regarding preps, I had Half-lytely in 12/12. It was half the amount of Colytely plus it included some pills that were gentle. ANN |
Dave Barry gave his take on Moviprep in the Miami Herald a few years back. Can't find a link to the original article, so I am reposting it below.

Thanks for the link Batman. I wish I could still get a framed certificate saying I am a mature adult and get toilet paper with , well not Paris Hilton but maybe George Clooney. For anyone who has no idea what I am talking about you have to read the article. I really wish I had a small TV I could just plug into the bathroom the whole evening with this MoviPrep. I know when we prepped our patients in the hospital we would make them comfortable in the bathroom, warm blankets, table for the Golytly jug and cup, extra water, as if they would want it, butt cream and check on them and make sure they were still alive.
Was reading up on what I can eat on the day before my procedure. It is very specific, eggs, low fat cheese, plain yogurt, bread, turkey or chicken lunch meat, pudding or jello. No fruit, no veggies, no nothing. My food diary for Wednesday is going to look weird. I will be getting my fluid in for the day though!!!LOL:wink::wink::wink: Well, in and then out. |
