Best foods for neuropathy
Hello, I am a 43 year old with 125 pound diabetic neuropathy with a1cs for the past 1.5 years between 4.9 and 5.2. I am able to keep my blood sugars under 100 throughout the whole day with fasting being between 84 and 93. Recently I have dropped my carb intake from 100 carbs to about 60 carbs a day and I am virtually starch free but the neuropathy keeps getting worse and now has graduated to my stomach. I have all the classic symptoms, feet, hands, face, arms and legs with small and large fiber neuropathy. I currently take benfotiamine, folate acid, methyl b12, niacinamide, magnesium malate along with a daily multivitamin.
I tried to see 2 neurologist outside of my city but will not see me without insurance. I did see the only neurologist in my city but basically said there is nothing he could do but a prescription for neurotin which is almost useless sometimes. I currently just quit taking fish oil supplements and started taking krill oil and evening promise oil, How long will it take for those new supplements to start working? I need some help with exactly what foods I should be eating, sometimes after I eat homeade vegetable soup with diced chicken, my legs will start burning within an hour after eating. Fruits for me are a big no no. Eggs and sausage cause my neuropathy to get worse because of the fat. So my breakfast is meatloaf (using natures own whole grain bread in the meatloaf as my only starch) and green beans. Below is a list of foods that I generally eat, all your help is greatly appreciated as to what I should eat to help me, Thank you. carbs 60gr, protein 150gr, fat 80 gr veggie Meatloaf green beans grounded flaxseeds sardines boiled okra whey protein soybeans salmon walnuts pecans veggie soup with wasa multigrain cracker (carrots, okra, broccoli, spinach, tomatoes, zuccini, squash, chicken, garlic, brussel sprouts, collard greens and turnip greens) |
Welcome to NeuroTalk:
Some people cannot handle the nightshade veggies (tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, etc). These can cause burning. Included would be many spices as well. MSG is another nasty character that will lead to burning too. Are you taking a statin for cholesterol control? |

I could exclude tomatoes and the tomatoe paste fom the next meatloaf |
dear mrs D, How long will the 2 300mg krill oil take to kick in and 1000mg x 3 per day of evening primrose oil to take affect as well, please let me know, Thank you

I really think, anyone with PN taking a statin and having PN, will not respond much to any thing other than dietary changes...removing foods that cause problems. I get burning from nightshades so I avoid them.
The CoQ-10 will protect your heart muscle from the statin, but it will not necessarily help the PN. I have a post here showing the damage to neurons from statins: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases...0510150143.htm statins damage neurons ...these are the photos illustrating it. Statins also damage the nerve cells ability to repair myelin. And it is thought they damage the mitochondria too. This post is new too... http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/post1002533-6.html It is from a scientist who posts on PD forum here. It breaks down the statistics of benefit vs risk for statins. I would think long and hard about using a statin when you have neuropathy. |
Agreeing with Mrs.D about the statins- my condition deteriorated quickly when I was on Tricor and my balance was horrible. Improved dramatically when I went off them.
Are you sure you have diabetic neuropathy? Mixed large and small fiber with your symptoms sounds like it could be CMT- hereditary neuropathy. Someone else who knows more about diabetic neuropathy will have to help out here. |

I forgot to mention that I also have autonomic neuropathy as well, so far it is affecting the blood vessels, i get really cold for no reason. i have removed the pravastain from my pill boxes, how long will it take to get the statins out of my system before i start seeing any results? I just started taking krill oil and evening primrose oil. how long do you think it will take before i see results from them, please let me know, thank you. |
