Nose Sores - Possible Odd Post Extraction Complication
Hi everyone,
In July 2013 I had an upper molar (#14) surgically extracted. It was a 10 year old root canal tooth and the reason for the extraction was on my yearly x-ray it appeared one area got a shadow on it that hadn't been there before. I had no symptoms. They offered me a repeat root canal, an apioectomy, or an extraction. I chose the extraction as I never knew a root canal could fail and I wanted that tooth out. The extraction went fine, I had no pain and no infection. I bled pretty good though and bled a teeny bit for three weeks. That part caused me immense anxiety but it eventually stopped and it healed up nicely. About 5 weeks post extraction my nostril on the extraction side began itching inside like crazy and then a whitehead-like pimple formed in it. Once the pimple formed the itching stopped. I assumed it was just a whitehead and left it alone and it was gone in a few days. I can feel them coming...my nose will itch and burn on the side one will form on and within a few hours to a day a sore will pop up. Once the sore pops up the pain goes away. The sores last an hour to two days. I was given a nasal swab early on and it showed normal nasal flora. I have been on Bactroban on and off with this last round for three weeks. The sores stay away when I take Bactroban but they come back when I go off it. I can't stay on the Bactroban forever. I was wondering if anyone has ever had or heard of this - recurrent whitehead-like sores in the nostrils and could the extraction be the cause of this and if so, why? I have seen two family doctors, 2 ENT's, 3 Dermatologists, and 2 Med Center doctors. I have been told everything from they are just pimples, or they are impetigo, or they are staph (2 nasal cultures later though showed negative for staph and MRSA). I am frustrated and scared since I cannot get rid of this and I don't know what it is. :( I find it suspicious that it began just 5 weeks post-extraction as that makes me wonder if he extraction caused something to go wrong somewhere in there. Thank you, Mich |
