Six Years Post Concussion

My daughter is six years post concussion in January. She improved significantly after 212 neuro-feedback treatments with the brain master based on QEEG brain maps. No more seizures or fatigue. But we are stuck and have not had any more improvement. She can't read more than 20 minutes without spiking a migraine. She tried vision therapy but it spiked headaches that she could not recover from between therapy sessions. Noise still bothers her but she can stay at most parties or dinners for almost an hour before she needs to leave. The barometric pressure changes still bother her.

We are considering Dr. Robert Zembroski in Darien CT who is a chiropractic neurologist. Any comments ?

Also, considering Michael Collins at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Sports Concussion Program. Any comments ?

Interesting

I suffered a concussion 3 years ago but oddly it is my wife of whom I think when reading your post.
She did suffer a fall many years ago she tells me; a bad one. Maybe that plays a part in this story. Now she, like your daughter, is aggravated by lights & noises. Sometimes she is more sensitive than other times causing headaches. Though a lot less than your daughter. It affects sleep and other things in her life. She cannot have the slightest light on when going to be. Like we have black out shades on the windows. She actually wears one of those Lone Ranger masks.
Just recently her Dr put her on an antidepressant. She is not at all a depressed person. What it is, is that what could be considered a side effect of this class of drugs is that it "calms down" that/those parts of the brain that are aggravated by external stimuli. Research is also finding that some people with fibromyalgia are benefiting from this (go figure). Not that any of these people are depressed. It just seems that their brains over-interpret external signals.
The wife was real reluctant to take the drug. She did not like the stigma that came with it. But 3 months out now and she's no longer thinks that.

Linda,

I am so sorry to hear your daughter is still struggling so.

I don't put high hopes on Mickey Collins at U Pitt. He is more focused on athletes getting back on the field. A 6 year history will be a challenge for his experience and research.

Chiro Neuro may be worth a try.

I know what she is going through because I have suffered a very bad relapse over the past three months. I have had to become a hermit.

I gave up trying to read fiction and even most technical writings long ago. My mind becomes overwhelmed and I zone out. Now, I end up fighting off head aches and what I call spaghetti brain.

My best to you both.

Hi Linda
My daughter is still getting better after 2.5 yrs. She went through UC Berkeley's eye center and was prescribed prism glasses. There was 4 days of testing and these glasses are to be used as a crutch to help her read, she won't always wear them. She too tried vestibular therapy and eye therapy and could not complete it due to feeling nausea.

What has helped her the most is acupuncture. She used to get really bad headaches,TMJ, fatigue, and now they are manageable. She is getting a full check on her hormones this month...see Estersdoll's post for more information on the tests being run and Mark in Idaho's posts to an organization that can test hormones. He recently posted this link for someone else

We will go up to SF for an NCUAA eval for a neck injury near the end of the yr.

Good thoughts to you and your daughter,

The bio-identical hormone referral link is https://www.womensinternational.com/..._referral.html

If you have not tried the hormone connection, it is worth a try.
