Your diagnosis

I am curious about other peoples diagnoses of BP. I got diagnosed at 43. It rocked my world, naturally. Isn't that late for a diagnosis? I certainly don't want to be inappropriate in anyway, I am just trying to understand how this happened. I know the hell it is for me and hopefully it will get better and hasn't been so for all of you.

Thx

I am BP1, have had psychotic episodes before, mostly lean toward the manic side, rarely depressed. 1st episode triggered by a depoprevera birth control shot, other manic episodes have come on when an antidepressant was added. not good. So I now say that I am allergic to ssri's. late 20's for me.

I was diagnosed BP by the first psychiatrist who saw me. I was about 25/26 (more than 20 years ago. At that time the profession did not have categories of BPI or BP II.
Before I was treated (and afterwards while the meds were get getting changed around), I was extremely anxious. I lived in a mixed mood.
With treatment, I have some anxiety and lots of depression.

I have first cousins on both sides of my family who are diagnosed BP.

I am bipolar with mood disorders, sometimes having psychosis with panic disorders, and obsessive compulsive disorder. These things have pretty well ruined my life. I think that I'm Bipolar II. My NP said that I have a PTSD variant because of the abuse that I have been through.

People treating us wrong, cruel words, and gossip can cause great harm to us over a period of time. Most of us are extremely sensitive emotionally. BF:grouphug::hug::hug:

Age of diagnosis

The age of diagnosis varies:

Age at Diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder

Quote:

They found the median age of onset – the age found in the middle of the set of all ages – was 25.2 years old.
Those with bipolar I disorder tended to be diagnosed earlier than those with bipolar II disorder and men were diagnosed younger than women.
25% of those in the study were diagnosed on or before age 20; only 2.81% were diagnosed at age 13 or younger.
What I found particularly interesting was the incredible range for the age of diagnosis.
There were children as young as 10, but also seniors in their 80's.
