pre surgery infection

I went in to the dentist yesterday due to a really bad pain behind my lower right wisdom tooth and was told that it was an infection caused by a piece of food or something lodged behind the wisdom tooth. i was told the easiest way to deal with this would be to just have them removed and being military they removed all 4 wisdom teeth on the spot. my question is the day after the surgery my infection is acting up just as bad as before the surgery and im wondering if the tooth removal drained any of it. any advice as to what i should do or should i give it time to see if it will heal on its own?

Hi USMCMurray,

Well by now you hopefully have had some relief!

Removing the wisdom teeth removes the source of the problems causing the infection. However, the surgeon needs to debride (scrape) out the surgical sites very thoroughly in an attempt to remove the periodontal ligaments that hold each tooth in the bone as well as all other visibly necrotic tissue. This encourages your immune system to deal with any slight residual bacteria and speed up the healing.

If the sites were not thoroughly debrided, then you would experience symptoms of the infection still being present.

Have you gone back to the surgeon? What was his diagnosis and treatment?
