On Keppra...hair REALLY thinning
Hi All,
Been on Keppra a few months and this last month I noticed my hair coming out everywhere and greatly thinning. Steroids increased my weight by 15-20 lbs and now losing hair. :( will be talking to dr about it I don't like seeing my scalp. Time for some cute hats I suppose. Still plateaued in recovery at 13+ months. Trying to learn how to live this new life still. ED, thanks for the privates message. I appreciate the support. Mark, forgot to turn the timer on every 5 min in the kitchen last night. Forgot I was sautéing onions. Still learning. I struggle greatly with cooking. Hope everyone had a peaceful and healthy holiday. Stay warm. Peace and good health, Jace |
Stress and other nervous issues can cause hair and nails to slow their growth. My hair got very thin and fine from the stresses of this past year. I put more effort into combing over the thinner areas now than I ever did before. It is frustrating but I've learned there is little we can do about it. Worrying and fretting only makes it worse.
As you said, hats work. Thinning hair can make for a cold head. I have a hat we call "Elmer" as in Elmer Fudd, Bugs Bunny's nemesis. Sometimes, we just have to learn to laugh at our struggles. My best to you. |
Most of the drugs like Keppra used for controlling seizures affect hair... The typical recommendation is to use a zinc supplement.
If you use acid blocking drugs alot --like every day-- this also blocks zinc absorption from food. A good form to try is Zinc monomethionine complex... by Source Naturals. This form is easily absorbed with little or no GI side effects. Other forms like sulfate are very nauseating. Picolinate form is a good second choice. You don't need much, so only one a day to start. If you don't see any response in a month or two, you can just stop it. Hair also needs sulfur, which egg yolks provide, and protein. |
