Movie (mpeg) editor - any recommendations?
Hello,
I am in need a movie editor for Windows-based video editing. Specifically, I have some mpeg files I need to edit. (I think they are mpeg-2.) I need to -- remove some segments -- join up some files My source files are .mpg. The edited files must be .mpg as well. Can anyone recommend a decent free (and SAFE!) mpeg editor that will do this? If you know of a (SAFE!) site from which to download, too, that would be very helpful. Thanks in advance to all who reply. waves |
Video editors and more
Well, I will post what I found, in case anyone else should at some point seek this kind of information, here is where I found what I needed:
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/secti...ditors-mpg-dvd That link gives you all kinds of clickable lists to refer to, depending on the kind of help you need. I am using MPEG Streamclip with Quicktime alternative, which serves my immediate purpose of editing and saving out MPEG-2 video. This tool reads and writes a multitude of formats. It has other capabilities too, but I have not investigated it extensively yet. waves |
Glad you found one you like, I haven't used any of those things for quite awhile and forgot the name of the one I had years ago...
I recall trying about 6 before finding one I liked.... |
Hi Jo, :)
Yes, there are really quite a lot, but I found that not that many free ones will write MPEG-2... For now I am just snipping and appending stuff so I don't need anything fancy. When I do, I might need something else. Don't know if this will cut it. So to speak. ;) waves |
Windows Movie Maker not good enough?
Edit: It seems people have had issues with MPG2 support in WMM. You'll need to look into that. See Best free video editing software: 9 top programs you should download |

I did try Windows Movie Maker before I posted. It choked trying to open my source file, with some error about having "too many events" associated with something. MPEG Streamclip opened the file no problem. Maybe it was a size problem -- my source files are close to a GB. Or... updated versions of WMM might work better. I am running XP for now. I will try it again when my new system (Win 8) arrives. BTW, I also tried VirtualDubMod -- quite nice and reads MPEG-2 but alas does not write MPEG-2 back out, and I need that. I will definitely check this out! Thank you! waves |
