Throat freeze
 

Hi guys

Just wondering if anyone else experiences this, and if so, any idea what it is. When I drink something really cold - or icy (like a slushy or a frozen coke)my throat tightens up and seems to spasm just below my voice box. It is very painful in my neck and upper chest and although it only lasts for a short time, I feel like I can't breathe.

It's almost like an ice-cream headache - only in my throat.

Been there, done that, Lyn. Not all the time though, just once in a while.
I loves my icy drinks...like an icy cold beer.:p

It could be caused by irritation of the phrenic nerve from the cold; much like cold hitting the nerve of a tooth. The Sx's could also be from a reflex spasm of the Scalene muscles. Those are accessory respiratory muscles-the ones that allow you to gasp for a bit of air when the diaphragm isn't working, like when you get the wind knocked out of you)...or both.

Next time it happens, try rubbing the muscles on the side of your neck. If that eases it, it is probably the latter.

I get something similar to that and was told it is an esophageal spasm. (Maybe that's the same thing Erika described?) It occurs randomly, and can happen with liquids, solids, cold, hot.

This is pretty much what I was thinking - NOT happy - very hot summer here right now, and I love a frozen coke, an ice-cream, or a cold beer on a very hot day.
