Thanks for the update, but I'm sorry it's all so very complicated right now.

Things get worse

Ash has been put on a risk assessment form at school:( he lost control in a lesson and went out of school in agigitated state and teachers had to find him he was punching walls and very distressed.

Katy4565 02-04-2014 04:30 PM

Update

Looks like ash may have to go to a specialist school as his mainstream have said they struggling to support his needs sighs....

Lara 02-04-2014 08:24 PM

What's your gut feeling about why he's be having these meltdowns in class? I'm wondering what sort of modifications have been put in place for your son in the mainstream classroom that he is in now. There are so many tiny things that can be done to help a child in a mainstream classroom but I don't know if your school has put any of those in place.

Does he have an IEP already?

What needs are the school addressing right now that they don't think they can continue?

Do you think that maybe a smaller class and more one on one support might be what he needs at this particular moment in time?

Katy, I have absolutely no idea how your education system works in the UK, but I would imagine it would be pretty similar to how it works in the US or other places regarding a child who needs specific modifications in the classroom. It's actually not that hard for a school/teacher who is clued in to address certain needs he might have. Nothing is static. Your son isn't necessarily going to need the same support in a year as he needs now.

Hi Katy
have they checked Ash for possible PANS? Not saying he has that....but imo always worth checking into.

PANS is a condition where tics, OCD and other neuropsychiatric symptoms can manifest as a result of infection, often (but not limited to) strep. TS and PANS are not mutually exclusive as someone with TS can have exacerbation due to infection.

There is a lot of info coming out about how many kids are misdiagnosed with Ts or with psychiatric disorders when in fact they have PANS

This site gives info about it http://pandasnetwork.org/

Lara 02-21-2014 03:00 PM

What's happening way over there, Katy? Sorry I've not been around lately to ask you.

Katy4565 02-22-2014 04:32 AM

Hi lara

Hope u r ok Lara xx well im waiting for a meeting to take place at the special needs meeting called senap they discuss statementing and statmented children they will decid how they can help ash at school but i fear the school just want him out and ash is picking up vibes because he said they dont care about him anymore cos he can tell.He gets depressed alot and says things like he wishes he was dead he has had a couple of bad meltdowns this week as it is the school holidays .So i will learn his fate on wednesday if he is going to stay at that school or if he has to go.still waiting 4 adhd med his blood pressure had to b checked cos it kept showing a high reading cos he gets so stressed when they use monitors etc and he fears they going to do a blood test anyway they finally got a better reading but i have concerns about the med i need to voice first before i allow them to adminster it.Whats happening at your end Lara x

Lara 02-23-2014 02:48 PM

Hi Katy,
Here's hoping that some helpful recommendations come out of this meeting. It's really concerning that your son is so down but with so much going on right now it's good to know he's at least talking to you and letting you know how he's feeling.

Crossing fingers for a helpful outcome from the meeting.

All good here. Feels as if it's been the longest summer ever. Very tiresome really, but that's weather. ;)

Katy4565 02-26-2014 05:19 PM

Hi lara

Ok so Ashley started the adhd med he isnt well he has started with small hives on face numbness light headed and very weepy edgy and anxious if this happens over nxt few days im taking him off it.The meeting took place today to decide the support they could give him and they are employing a autistic specialist from the mental health service to assess and offer advice and support for ashley she will be employed 6 hours a week for him so hopefully they can get to the bottom of this.Put Ashley to bed as he is causing himself to panic he thinks he is dying and wants me to check him through the night to make sure he isnt dead poor boy is past himself.

Lara 02-26-2014 10:52 PM

Oh boy! What's he been prescribed? I think you may have said Adderall but I forget now. I hope he's OK. Poor boy.

I'm actually really pleased that the meeting was somewhat fruitful. Hopefully this new person at school will be a lot of help. It's not much time in a week, but it's a start.

It's been a terrible time for him and for you. I remember what it was like to be in the midst of chaos while doctors and schools couldn't seem to "get it". Thinking of you and your son.

Lara 03-27-2014 02:09 PM

Hi Katy,
It's been a little while now and I've been wondering how your son is doing.
I'm hoping some of the support services have been put in place by now and are helping.

Please let me know. I hope to hear he's doing better.

Hi lara

Sorry i havent been about its been very stressful .No not as yet nothing changed but we looking at a alternative education place on tuesday so ash will do part school part this place so fingers x its ok.Iv recently lost my job what i love because the child i support in a school has had to leave the area due to foster home change.I have found this hard because we had a strong bond and i am very emotional bout him.so the funding as gone to pay for my job.so its a double heartache as i also loved my job.:(Ash has remained the same. How are you? Thanks for caring Lara xx

Lara 04-06-2014 03:16 PM

All the best for the Tuesday appointment!

I'm really sorry to hear about losing your student and subsequently your job. That's awful.

I guess due to the circumstances you wouldn't be able to have contact or know how he is faring with all the changes. I can only imagine how difficult that would be for you.

We're fine here. 1st term is just finished. Still waiting for summer to cool off. Longest and hottest summer I can remember. It's gone from Sept. to April and more to come I guess. I know, I know. Everyone wants a summer. I'm just waiting for it to go to the northern hemisphere. ;)

take care of yourself.

Hi Lara, ash has been awarded two day at a independant special school a week and one session of specialist teaching .We are going to look at the school on wednesday.Ash doesnt want to thou but it is something we have to do.Ash has got his humming tic back and now developed a sniffing tic.He has had a major meltdown which led to a breakdown it was very hard to witness.Wot can u do wen u child is begging to b normal and for it all to go away.He has got abit more physical towards me too by means of pushing me my hubby wasnt very pleased and was very firm and angry with him for which led to the breakdown.Ashley really struggles to regulate his behaviour or understand that he is wrong. On a funny note we went to his grandmas and she told him she makes a mean chocolate cake in which Ashley replied "no you dont grandma u make a lovely chocolate cake" he took the mean literally it was quite funny but shows how he interpretates convos and takes words literally.Hope u r well and u family xx

Lara 05-10-2014 03:41 PM

Just when you get time, Katy, please let me know how your son is doing now that you have the couple of days
at the new school and the added specialist teaching.

I know it's been a transition time for your son, so he's probably finding all the changes quite difficult to deal with,
which is understandable, and that would be affecting his behaviour when he is at home. He still needs to know
right from wrong, so it's tough love parenting time. Hopefully that aggressive behaviour will settle down once he's
set up with a regular routine again. He's been on overload for quite some time now.

take care of yourself.

Hi Lara, Ashley has been at his new provision a couple of weeks now and is settling well .It is a very relaxed place in fact not a school but a house wiv dogs running around horses and chicks. The dog sits on his knee while working and is not discouraged at all. There are only six kids there and things are more simple as in he sees the same faces each time and not moving about classes etc.The specialist has observed him in his mainstream setting and agrees he has the charactics of Autism but she cant diagnose him she is a autistic specialist T/A but think they can help Ash and myself and help get the mental health to listen to me.She can see where the issues are and has good ideas.Ash has not improved in mainstream setting as yet.how r u huni?xx

Lara 06-04-2014 07:51 PM

Everything is sounding a lot more positive at last.
That's a really good thing.
The more relaxed environment even though only part time, might just be what he needs for the moment.

I'm well, Katy.
Thanks for asking.

Keep us posted and don't forget to look after yourself as well as the family.
