Doc Martin to the rescue
 

I know we all have our TV favorites. Mine must be "Doc Martin". Last night at 3 AM, sleepless, laughing over an old episode on streaming Acorn TV. I got the whole 6 seasons plus the two originating movies for less than $20 for six months.

"Martin" in the original movies could still smile a lot. Not much smiling any more on poor Doc's face, just once in a precious while.

If you haven't called Doc Martin, and want a series full of laughs, wonderful characters, and wonderful scenery on the coast of Cornwall, give a new Doc a try. For years people told me it was great and I didn't bother to look, but one night...hooked!

Mariel, I'd been hearing a lot about "Doc Martin" too for years and was able to see all the episodes as they were being shown locally. It was well worth seeing--I just wish the series hadn't ended. I miss Louisa and Martin and the people of Portwenn.

There is a Season 6. It will not be shown on our local Public Television for a while, and I was unaware that it even would be shown at all, (until I called them) so I bought for $20 the Acorn tv streaming series 1-6 plus the two movies prior to those, which had a slightly different plot. Then I started watching (from the same streaming Acorn site) Martin Clunes' earlier series, "William and Mary". I watched the entire series in one day, since I had a bad cough and couldn't do anything but sit there anyway. This is getting to be a major addiction.
Today I have work to do around the house and the cough is 50% better, so I will learn to live without Portwenn for a while. But I'm sure I'll end up watching it all again.

The new season 6 started here on our PBS last night. They show it at 7pm on Sundays so far.

The first episode was amazing and very very good. You should all love it! I sure did!

MrsD, the series begins on different dates at different Public TV channels, so you have to look in the flier from the Public TV nearest you. It will begin March 27 here, but I had already signed up for the Acorn streaming TV, which is where I found "William and Mary".
This is a wonderful series too, although not as gripping as Doc Martin. the two movies preceding the series Doc Martin portrayed a somewhat lighter Doc than the being inhabiting the tv series. They are wonderfully funny and introduce us to the same Portwenn.

My next Martin Clunes watch may be "The Islands of Britain", which he narrated, a series going to the small islands of Mann, Jersey, etc. I think I can get it streaming on Amazon, which would be the only way to get it unless I buy a DVD converter. I did not know that some English movies are not playable on American DVD's.
Martin Clunes had some of the same childhood problems as Doc Martin, the character he played. His dad, a classical actor who traveled widely, died when Martin was 8, and his mother was advised to put him in a hated boarding school. His mother was more loving, however, than "Doc Martin's" mother. He has a working farm in Dorset. He and his wife and teen-aged daughter are all horse riders and active in horse shows.
One article I read said he had not ruled out the return of Doc for another season, even though he had said season 6 would be the last. He says the lure of Cornwall does call to him--but right now, as we know, the Cornish coast is being inundated by storms.
