Persistent Wisdom Tooth Infection after Extraction
 

Hi Every1,

I recently got my lower left wisdom tooth removed - Monday 27th.

It was a fairly straight forward removal with no problems but following the removal I contracted an infection at the extraction site. I was unaware it was an infection at first and thought it was just normal pain that occurred after a wisdom tooth extraction. The pain gradually got worse until 3 days later it was so severe that I was having to take pain killers (400mg Ibuprofen & 2x 500/8 Cocodamol) every 4 hours.

I was able too get an emergency appointment at the dentist where he confirmed it was infected. He irrigated the site, cleaned out the infected tissue and packed it with a medicated dressing. This was done without anaesthetic and the process was fairly uncomfortable but not too bad.

Later that night the pain returned quite strongly and that night I had to take pain killers again, just to get to sleep.
I returned to the dentist the next day with another emergency appointment. He was incredibly shocked at how quickly the infection had returned so cleaned it out again and re dressed it. He attempted to give it a more thorough clean this time without anaesthetic and it was excruciating!! He also prescribed 5 days worth of anti biotics (500mg x 3 a day - Amoxicillin) this time.

After 5 days, the infection had not been as aggressive but was still back none the less so I returned to the dentist on Wednesday this week and we repeated the same procedure however I demanded it be done under local anaesthetic this time. Unsurprisingly it has returned less than 36 hours later.

I am going to return to the dentist again tomorrow and was wondering what I should be asking / expecting?
Surely we can't just keep repeating this process?!

Are there better antibiotics available?
Can a biopsy be taken of the area?

Compared to what some people go through with multiple extractions, this is no where near as severe but it is still very annoying. I'm having to take pain killers on a daily basis and averaging 2 - 3 trips to the dentist a week.

Is there anything I can do to help?
I've been washing my mouth with warm salt water after every meal and I'm using Corsodyl 24 hours after the medicated treatment is applied and then daily afterwards. Is there anything else?

Any help would be greatly appreciated? This is very frustrating
