Oh, and anothr question

Are either Neurontin, keppra, or diovan used for PN?

Thanks

mrsD 02-14-2014 06:05 PM

Diovan is for elevated blood pressure. I can't see a reason for PN treatment, unless the pain is elevating the blood pressure thru stress.

Keppra yes...it is an antiseizure drug and these are sometimes used for chronic pain.

Neurontin also is very common in PN treatments.

As always :) MrsD is correct......Hey there MrsD !

I have SFN and am wading thru meds with my neuro to see what works. Right now I'm on 1800 mg a day of gabapentin/Neurotin and 60 mg of Cymbalta. I also have to take vicodin every 3 to 4 hours and I use Xanax as needed on the really bad days.

We have a new post here today, about a drug in the ARB family being looked at for nerve pain.... It is not on the market yet, and is from Australia.

This is the link to today's thread:
http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/thread201097.html

The drug Diovan is also an ARB.... so there might be some connection to your question, if your doctor is reading the research on Ema401....

In this country, ARBs are not FDA approved for anything other than hypertension, that I know of.
But here are some other off label uses:

The ARB Benicar has been used to treat sarcoidosis. That treatment is controversial still.

I'm sorry, I meant Dilantin, not diovan. I take both along with Neurontin and other stuff.

Yes I believe Dilantin can be used for PN. My doctor hasn't offered that but has suggested keppra. I tried neurotin but was not able to tolerate it.

SDFencer 02-18-2014 01:28 AM

Oh, I am the human PDR as I am guessing a lot of folks here are. Dilantin, Keppra, and Neurontin are just three of my daily prescriptions

mrsD 02-18-2014 02:28 AM

Phenytoin appears on lists of drugs that
can cause neuropathy.

SDFencer 02-18-2014 07:53 AM

Oh groovy, I've been on 600 mg of Dilantin a day for about 8 years. I also take Cymbalta.

mrsD 02-18-2014 08:58 AM

I'd discuss getting off the Dilantin, with your doctor.
