vision jumps (big to small) and "colored sand"
 

Hi All,

My son is almost 12 and when he was about 4 he asked why bright reflections looked like "colored sand". He still has this phenomomon. The past year he now also has an occurrance where it is like a lens magnification switch being flipped, where everything appears smaller, then snaps back after a few seconds, perhaps several times. Anything familiar sounding that I can research? Costco took super high-rez images of his eyes and besides having my nearsightedness, his eyes are healthy.

Not sure about the coloured sand part, but your post caught my eye regarding the vision jumps. Does your son have any other conditions like Epilepsy or Migraine, or anything else? Does he wear glasses? (edited to add: I've also heard of people with gluten sensitivity who have visual disturbances such as micropsia.)

You might like to search for "Micropsia".

I'd get a referral to a Neurologist if it was my boy.

He does wear glasses and is very healthy, with exception of a few months when every week or two he was throwing up at night for no reason. No headaches but migraines was mentioned as possibility by stumped pediatrician.

Migraines don't always involve headaches; they're called acephalgic migraine (sometimes referred to as 'silent migraine'). They often/usually involve visual aura/component.

When he says his vision looks like colored sand does he mean it looks "grainy" as if he has lost fine resolution. Sort of like going from 720p to 240p on a youtube video?

Also does he note any "shimmering" of his vision when this happens? By this I mean something akin to objects seen through the hot air coming off a desert blacktop road.

And when he has his vision "jump" is it like he's looking through a zoom lense then it pops back to normal? This can go either way, that is from zoom-in back to normal or zoom-out back to normal.
