1st possible grand mal seizure-- help?

Hi Guys, I had an eppisode a few weeks ago (early May 2007 I guess) that I was carrying food into my living room and all of a sudden, my hands shook and then the next thing I knew I was on the floor with food everywhere around me. Was it a grand mal?

Hi T.J.,
I'm sorry to hear what has happened. This sounds like it may have been a grand mal sz. but it might have also been a severe cp sz. I've always had cp and absence sz. but just this past yr. I started having grand mal sz. every now and then. I found out that it was from my AED drug level being to high causing the grand mal sz. I know it sounds strange but depending on what a person is taking this can happen. I take mysoline which breaks down into phenobarbital and the phenobarb level was so high it caused me to have a grand mal sz. If you have cp sz. it may have been a severe cp sz. where a person has muscle spasms and begins to shake this happened to me once, but I was conscious. I fell but when I tried to get up I couldn't.
You might want to call your neuro and request that a blood test be done to check the drug levels of your AED's because sometimes if they are to high or to low grand mal sz. can happen. Here's wishing you well and May God Bless You!

It would be really hard to say what it was without actually seeing it or knowing details. There's many things that could cause you to drop, pass out/black out, etc.. I suggest you contact your Neurologist right away and have some testing done, so that they can see if you are having seizures, an increase in seizures, and so on to decide if you maybe need medication or a change/increase in your medication.

I was going to say the same thing that Ellie said. It's hard to say what happened without more information. Were you tired or confused when you came out of it? Did you feel anything happen besides you hands shaking? Did you need to take a nap afterwards?

Just because your hands shook doesn't always mean that you had a seizure. It could have been something else that caused your hands to shake.

I had a few absence seizures while in high school from 1997 to 2003. Had them mostly in my feshman year so teachers thought it was anxiety and I was faking. CT scans did show slight seizure activity though. Dispite my hydrocephalus and the fact I was born 3 months premature weighing 2 pounds 6 ounces, I don't think I was ever diagnosed with CP and if I was I don't know about it to this day! I am on Nurontin 300 MG and Zoloft 100 MG. After it happened all I wanted to do was sleep! I was tired! As far as details I don't know anything but before and after and I was home alone when it happened. After I came around I figured I must have dropped my dinner as there was spagetti all over the floor around me and a broken plate!

Hi T. J.
If I may ask how long have you been taking the neurontin? The reason why I'm asking is because my family Dr. put me on neurontin for head pain and it caused me to have absence status sz. where I was out of it for 40 min. to 3 hrs. this went on for about 1 yr. until I saw my epi and he took me off the drug and after that I never had a absence status sz. again.
Do you remember having an aura sz. where you had colors in your eyes, heard noises, or got a weird feeling in your stomach? Often this will happen to me right before a cp sz. and just like you whenever I have something hot in my had like a cup of coffee or tea I always drop it. I agree with everyone else you should let your neuro know about this. I just hope that it wasn't the neurontin that caused you to have a possible grand mal sz. I know the drug co. making neurontin has $240 million in legal cases against them for what the AED has done to people. Here's wishing you well and May God Bless You!

I have been on the neurontin for about 6 months. I got a weird feeling like sharp shallow breathing then right before it happened a tingle in my lips and then twiching in my mouth then I guess I dropped my food and was out as when I woke up food was all over the floor and my dog was cleaning it up. Sorry I can't be of more help but I'm just trying to figure out the sequence of events.

Hi T.J.
I'm no Dr. but what you described to me sound a lot like what happens to me right before I have a cp sz. I'll often have a twitching or muscle spasms around my mouth with a nervous feeling in my stomach this is an aura sz. (simple partial) which then leads into a cp sz. You might want to keep watch and see if you notice this happen again. I hope it never does! You take care and May God Bless You!

Sue

P.S. I ask myself if it's the neurontin causing the problem.

tjlovesjesus 05-23-2007 09:25 AM

If my Nurontin is causing the problem then I'm out of luck as my meds make me tolerable to people. When I'm not on meds my parents and others can't stand to be around me. So, I have not much of a chance to get off of it. Also I was having a bunch of simple partials yersterday so from what a few friends have told me, I think another grad mal may be comming but I'm not sure.
