Severe MP - poll on narcotics- need change

Hi all
MP for 5 years
1200mg Neurontin
75mg Fentynyl
10mg Norco

Basically, I need help. I am in terrible pain everyday and, otherwise, in extreme discomfort. I, m interested to hear what other MP sufferers are taking nin form of narcotic. I am very tired and buzed al day from the other meds I listed above so im scared to increase those.

What narcotics and milligrams work for you?

Thanks, Amanda

Hi Amanda,

Have you tried nerve blocks of the LFCN?

Most of your pain now is probably coming from the fentanyl. Neurontin levels are not therapeutic at that small of a does, 2700-3400 is what I took. Lyrica worked better but is basically the same thing. Once you are on a therapeutic level of Neurontin the haze goes away.

I highly suggest the chronic pain rehabilitation program at the Cleveland clinic. They are experts in this and getting you on the correct medication for MP.

And is swear by lidocaine patches! Just shave your leg first. I wore them 24x7
The LFCN is only light touch, hairs and lightly touching the skin is like tearing burning flesh. I suffered for a decade before I figured out the shaving part.

You have to get off the Fentanyl though, it is mimicking the pain and causing anxiety (anxiety is the suffering part of pain). I know what you are going through and even after having the nerve recected two years ago, I and still on the road to recovery.

Can you please tell me which Lidocaine Patch you were using.

My doctor prescribed me a patch but it was over $200 with insurance so I could not afford it. Is the one you use 24/7 over the counter? If so which one is it. In horrible pain sounds like it could really help. Thanks

Hi Jakara55,

My Lidoderm patches were $90 per box with insurance so I do know how awful the expense and mine was much less than yours.

The pain patches work for some MP sufferers but not all. Due to the cost, you may want to ask your doctor if he can give you a few sample ones to try. There is also now a generic for Lidoderm patches that may be less costly. Another option is to try an over the counter pain patch.

There are many different modes of treatment for MP. They range from physical therapy, oral medications, pain patches, supplements, TENS unit, steroid injections, radio frequency ablation, and as a last resort surgery.

If you are new to MP, there is also the chance that it could abate on its own. However, if you have suffered for years with it, it has progressed in frequency, duration, and intensity, you may want to be more aggressive in your treatment.

I used the Lidoderm patches for a few years with only minimal relief at best. I now get my LFCN injected every so often and that has made a world of difference. I still have MP, I still have pain especially the longer it gets between injections, but I have tried everything else short of surgery.

Wishing you the best. Let us know what you decide to do and how you are doing.

The injections have been the BEST for me just as the other poster found the patches so helpful. The same treatment is not always the best treatment for everyone with MP. It all depends on the person and the extent of the damage to the LFCN.

Try an over the counter patch and see if that gives you any relief. I would hate for you to spend that kind of money if it will not help you. It may and it may not.

Thank you so much for replying to my post. (All my post) means the world to me that you have taken the time. I have reached out to friends and family trying to hunt down the patch to give it a try. Actually had a good morning but got cocky and went to the mall with the wife. Half way through the pain appeared and just got worse and worse. Had to cut the day short. Kind-of depressing that this is the way it's going to be. I am not that much over my ideal weight. I'm use to being very active. I hate anything keeping me still but the pain sometimes is unbearable. How have you been dealing with it for so long? Again thanks for your replies.
