Control of Hand Function in Parkinson's Disease

Summary: Loss of dexterity of the hands and fingers frequently occurs in people with Parkinson's disease (PD), particularly during activities that involve all the fingers and during daily tasks, such as safely holding an object while walking. This study will compare the control of grip forces of all five digits grasping an object of people with PD with those of healthy participants while they grasp, lift, hold and walk with the object across a room. The changes in fingertip forces on the object and the movements of the arms, legs and trunk during each walking step will be measured to determine how PD affects the control of grasp during daily activities.
