Liver function test high...?
 

Hi everyone, hope this post finds everyone doing well. I just got back some blood work and was wondering if you all could give me some advice. My ALT liver function test came back at 31 U/L, normal for a woman is not more than 16.53, I'm somewhat concerned because I was wondering if SFN can cause liver problems? I'm trying to find out why my test is this high. Thank you for any help. Jan:confused:

Have you taken a lot of acetaminophen (Tylenol), and/or do you take any prescription pain meds that contain it?

Other kinds of prescription meds can be hard on the liver a well—that's where I'd look first. If you're not sure, post them here, or ask your pharmacist.

Hi Dr. Smith,
I take 80mg. Of baby aspirin for my heart, and 300mg. Of Gabapentin per day, that's about it other then a few supplements. I have hypoglycemia along with SFN. Is 31 UL really high? I know nothing about this. I hardly ever take anything with Tylenol in it. Thanks for helping me with this. Jan

No that is not a very high result. High is over 100 or further in the 100's--

Some viruses will raise liver functions temporarily but often that is much higher. Mono for example can really push you up.

But there are autoimmune liver diseases, and since your whole PN experience may have an autoimmune component, you should have your doctor monitor you closely.

My mother in law moved to Calif many years ago, contracted Valley Fever there (a virus) and developed autoimmune hepatitis. She was managed well, and lived to be 92 yrs old.

Several years ago my liver enzymes were high when I was checked at my 6 months' appointment for my thyroid medication. My main stream endo never liked the supplements I took and immediately asked me to discontinue them and return in 3 months for more labs. I returned but never did stop the supplements and this time my labs were still high, but going down. To make a long story short, about 5 months later I had a severe gall bladder attack and had to have emergency surgery to remove it. I think it was a wake-up call that went unanswered for me until it was too late.

Synthroid was/is the only drug I take.
