Brain Injury Awareness Day - Ottawa, Ont
Just to let anyone in the area know about a 1 day workshop for Brain Injury Awareness Day being held June 11, 2014 at the Ottawa Conference and Event Centre
The plenary keynote speaker is Dr. Marshall and there is information, resources and a couple of workshops. I am particularly interest in a session for Smart Phone Apps ad ABI. There has been someone doing research in the area of Smart Phones helping with cognitive deficits and other aspects of TBI. The event is free, including a free lunch, all that is required is to register. |
Hi Norma,
Thanks for the info. I'll be sure to check it out. |
Thanks for posting Norma.
Not sure I'll be able to go, an all day event sounds like it would be too much for me. I'd like to go though, being as Dr Marshall is my doc, would be interesting to hear his talk and the smart phone apps workshop would probably be very good too. I just can't imagine lasting all day though. Starr |
Thanks for the post, Norma.
If you learn anything useful, could I impose upon you to post it on the forum? Out here, in the boonies, TBI patients are very much on our own. My province's Brain Injury society doesn't even have a staff person. :( |
I will post what I find.
Starr, I am also concerned about how long I can last. My limit is usually 2 hours, however I am going to try and rest up before and take breaks. Even if I do not make it for the whole thing, it will be interesting to see what is there. You never know when you find something or find someone who can help you. Fortunately I do not live too far from the conference centre, which is also a hotel. Might be an idea to get a room to rest!!!! |

Thanks for bringing the brain injury awareness day to our attention. I was only able to attend the talk by Dr. Shaun Marshall in the morning, and then return to hear the talk by the snowboarder KP in the afternoon. I'm still on a waiting list to see Dr. Marshall, so I was particularly interested in his guidelines for managing patients with M TBI. The case study of the patient with PCS was in some ways similar to my experience. I was interested to hear that when patients present with PCS symptoms in his practice he approaches them with the following priorities: 1. Sleep 2. Headaches 3. Mood With this knowledge, I'm hoping that I can return to my physician and have my sleep disruptions addressed. GG |
I regret not having read your post earlier as I would have loved to attend being in the city and working only a few kilometers from the conference ctr! I was fortunate to see Dr Marshall on a few occasions as a patient. The Rehab facility on Smyth Rd where he works has many resources available to mTBI patients once you're seen by Dr Marshall. Once a patient, one has lifelong access to these resources. Dr Marshall has also contributed to the "Guidelines for Concussion/Mild Brain Injury & Persistent Symptoms" which available as a free download through the Ontario Neurotrauma Foundation. These are comprehensive guidelines that have adhered as best as possible to evidence based research or, at the very least, expert opinion. Worth a read.
