It's the tuba. Tuba players have known about it for a long time. I have a friend who lives in dairy country and belongs to a tuba band. When he sits out in his back field practicing/playing, it's not unusual for neighbors' cows to stray over for a friendly listen.

I've heard of cats being drawn to stringed instruments as well. Not because of catgut strings (which are actually made from the gut of about any/everything but cats) but the caterwauling sounds.
