Kerogenic diet?

Hello, I am looking for any info on the ketogenic diet, just to see if it helps. Basically I need recipe ideas! I'm taking the leap this week, just to see if it helps. I'm also suffering brain fog and am on a mental illness medication known to cause insulin resistance; I'm desperate to feel better and possibly lessen my doseage. With my history of temporal lobe spikes, I'm hoping my poor old weary brain is vulnerable to a little nutritional help. I know how it works, so I don't need info on the diet, just food ideas. The internet says what it is but there's no websites on how to actually implement it in real life. Help?

"Ketogenic" diet-- inducing ketones.

People start that under serious supervision, do you have a neurologist and nutritionist who would start you? All the kids I've heard of stay in the hospital initially.

Do you know why it is common to hear about keto for kids but not adults? Are GAPS/MAD/other diets tried first with adults or what is the background on that?

I wasn't aware of that, but I suppose if the epilepsy is that resistant, they wouldn't want to take any chances.

ive never heard of the other diets. No, no neurologist, yet... I was just going to try it on my own.

Hi Qwerky,

I will tell you that if you are on the drug, Diamox you will have to go off of the drug to be on the diet. I have been on it and one thing I do for a recipe is make popsicles from kool aid and then after they are frozen I dip them into canola oil and put them back in the freezer.
If you are interested you can buy the book titled "The Epilepsy Diet Treatment" By Dr. john Freeman this explains all about the diet and how it works. You do have to go on the diet slowly and pogo mentioned sometimes a person has to stay in the hospital for a short time for their body to adjust to the diet.

You may want to try using coconut oil with 100% virgin oil this is what I'm doing now. I take a tiny dish and put 1 tsp. of coconut oil in the dish then I add peanut butter and a little bit of sugar. Mix up all the ingredients and put the dish in the frig to get cold and a little hard. Then enjoy. Another thing you can do is put a teaspoon of coconut oil in your coffee or tea and the coconut oil builds up keytones and stops sz. just like the ketogenic diet. You have to slowly increase the coconut oil over a few weeks so you are up to 2-4 tablespoons a day. I have found this really reduced my sz. and it helps lose weight also. To get more info. just go on line and type in coconut oil stopping seizures. Here's wishing you the best of luck and May God Bless You!

That is very good to know! Love the Popsicle idea! And the peanut butter idea, too. I wonder if this can be done with jello? You know, drip in soft coconut oil into semi set jello then whip it and make either parfaits or Popsicles. I had no clue coconut oil was that good for us. And I've been putting it on my hair! Yikes.

God bless you too, Sue.

Hi Qwerky,

I see no problem with you putting coconut oil into jello it sounds like a good idea. Also if you burn put some on your skin before you go outside and it will help you tan. Just be sure that if you do decide to use the coconut oil that you work your way up slowly until you reach 4-5 tablespoons each day and whatever you do stay away from the nutra sweet because that can trigger sz. like crazy. Here's wishing you only the best and May God Bless You!

Hi Sue!
Just made the cocoa "dessert" n I have to admit, it surprised me how yummy it is!! Licked the bowl and all lol. Can't wait til it freezes up!!

I passed on your info to my sister, too. Thank you!

Hi Qwerky,

I just wanted to let you know that if you don't want to use the coconut oil you can try using canola oil also. I have found that the coconut oil works better for me but everyone's body chemistry is different. I hope your sister enjoys the recipes.
Wishing you only the best of luck and May God Bless You!

Sue
