post-op cognitive problems... can you help??
 

Hello everybody,
I am so happy to have found this forum!
I need advise.... tried to look online but didn't find anything that could help :confused:

My mum has been recently diagnosed with 2 very large brain aneurysms and had craniotomy performed in order to place clips around them.
All of this happened in a couple of months, we went for second and third opinion, but each hospital and consultant gave us a different version of how they would have performed the surgery. In the end, we trusted the consultant we thought had the most experience.

She had surgery 1 month ago. Doctors say it went perfectly well, my mum can talk, walk, speak, eat, didn't have any seizures.... everything fine for them...

except that her personality has drastically changed and her cognitive abilities too! I mean she is now very assertive, like a 10 years old girl, she does everything she is asked to but, in fact, she cannot be left alone. She wouldnt be able to care for herself, like cooking, cleaning the apartment etc..

Many times she goes into staring mode or mannerism mode like playing with a small piece of paper or anything else...

bottom line, the operation was not a success at all in our point of view!
Never ever 1 doctor told us that this could occur, if so, I am sure my mum would have thought twice before deciding to go for surgery. She has always been very active, very quick minded, very smart, now she needs round the clock care!

She was referred to her GP for aftercare and he obviously doesn't know what to do. We contacted the consultant that performed the operation but we feel like he is taking time, he is saying now that she needs at least 3-4 months...

I am here for some words of wisdom from you people. You have been through this or had somebody very close going through this.

Is there anybody that had a similar experience? My mum never suffered any SAH. Can you relate to this problem?

Also, in your experience or by talking to doctors, do you think I should get tested? How frequent aneurysms are passed from parents to their kids?

My family and I would really like to hear experiences from other people! It has been a very tough period, we look at her and do not recognize her!

It is devastating, it feels like I lost my mum the day of the surgery... nobody ever told us something like this could happen!

She was a very healthy young and bright person, now she needs 24 hours care!

I guess I could have coped better with motor skills or speech problems... and now thinking that the same could happen to me...
