We're not in the 1940's anymore!
 

Apparently my Teacher Aide thinks we are. It was recently the World Wheelchair Rugby Championships in my city, there was a special on TV about New Zealand's team, the Wheelblacks. These guys are all quadriplegic and use chairs full-time, they're not like sitting in the corner pittying themselves, they've been all over the place and really joke about their disabilities. Anyway, my TA saw the special and we were talking about it, she says "Yeah, it's so nice that they can get out!" I was like "What the heck?!" to myself, didn't people used to say those things decades ago? We're in the 21st century if she hasn't noticed. I was thinking "What a stereotypical thing to say." It's a disabled sport, but is just as serious as any other sport, disabled or not.

But she thinks disabled sports aren't serious. You don't just win at the Paralympics because you're disabled, it's almost like she thinks every disabled sport is "everybody wins" and that any person can play them.

Like, with boccia too, I used to bring my set to school so I could play a game with the TA. She doesn't put ANY effort into it and she goes hysterical when I do a good shot.

It just bothers me that she thinks people who have disabilities who play sport are just there because society has 'let them out' into the public because it's the right thing to do.

Sorry, just venting a bit.

we met mark zupan this summer. and watched some games at a US annual games for quad vets.

(although i have to admit - even some of these guys on the quad teams can have some backwards attitudes sometimes. the world can just be filled with ignorance. but i agree, that comment in particular is..um..behind. way behind.)

I watched Mark Zupan, he's freakin' amazing I got to go to the Championship final, almost courtside. :D

when my son met mark, he asked him with his speech device - "what do you like about playing quad rugby?" to which he replied...the contact, man, the smashing into stuff.

my boy beamed. and NOT because he thought it would be nice to "get out of the house". :D

Maybe she can not see correctly but those out there with disabilties that try out for say the special olympics generally have a better physique than the average person on the planet. it is completely bs to say that just becaus youre in a wheelchair that it makes youless of a sports athlete. those people in those wheelchairs could beat just about any abled bodied person given a wheel chair any day of the week. I qwould ask her if she thinks that way about female athletes as well because she clearly is nuts.

Oh man do I remember that. In 6th grade, I was on the volleyball team (imagine that, pfft) and the TA would practically have an aneurysm when I scored for our side. Hooray for being the only person in a chair in my school.
