left over root taken out advice please.
 

hi, last october my old dentist pulled my back tooth out, i had dry socket and a horrendous infection cus of the root.

on monday, i had that piece of root took out and cleaned, (without sedation:)) the dentist said he had got rid of all infection, he did say he could see my wisdom tooth and said i COULD get an infection from that and i would have to go back in and have the wisdom out, why did he not take the wisdom out there and then i wonder?

if the wisdom caught an infection would it feel like the dry socket? the same day as the anaesthetic wore off i never had any pain. yesterday, tuesday, my cheek was a bit swollen and i had pain like when i had the dry socket, its wednesday now cheek is still a bit swollen and have a little pain again. i've not taken that many painkillers and i honestly thought i would be climbing the walls with pain.

is this all normal please as its my kind of luck to get every infection known to mankind!!

Did you see an oral surgeon for the removal of the root tip or a general dentist?

You can develop an infection from the removal of the root tip especially if there was contact with the wisdom tooth during the procedure. It could feel similar to a dry socket or it could just swell up. However, there is no way to know for sure if it will happen or not.

Depending on where the wisdom tooth is located, if it is impacted, if it laying horizontally, etc., would determine whether it needs to be removed or not.

i couldn't tell you if he was an oral surgeon, it just says on my letter it just says: speciality: oral and maxillo facial surgery.

i presume there was contact with the wisdom as he said he could see it and it is an impacted one. after the procedure and the local wore off i didn't really have any pain until last night, when i previously had the dry socket and infection it is the same pain that goes to one tooth at the front? i am doing everything that i should be doing and still have not smoked, do you think i would have known about any infection by now as it was done on monday. when i had the dry socket and infection last time, my breath was awful and had an awful taste in my mouth, but i have not yet got that.

i had a tooth pulled out on the other side aswell and the teeth next to it hurt, could that have made the deep pocket i may have worse? im just fed up of being in pain with my teeth, i also still feel dizzy/lightheaded that started as soon as i got up from the surgery.

I had my wisdom teeth removed earlier this year as one had cracked in half and I needed stiches in my jaw the pain was excruciating its been 6 months now and I am fine but id still seek out some advice to whether there is an infection

I asked about his credentials because oral surgeons usually perform oral surgery different than general dentists. It is usually best to see an oral surgeon for removal of root tips, wisdom teeth, infected or fractured teeth because their surgery is more thorough. Also, just for future reference... it's probably best to know the credentials of the person who is performing any surgery on you.

If the wisdom tooth is impacted and it's not infected or causing any structural problems then it may be left alone. If an infection develops then it would need to be removed.

Infections can be present with little or a lot of symptoms. Sometimes they show themselves within a few hours or several months down the road. I cannot tell you if you have an infection or not based on your descriptions here.

If you have concerns, go see the dentist who extracted your tooth.

Regarding the other extraction.... it is common for the adjacent teeth to be tender after the removal of a tooth. As far as the pocketing issue.... I really have no idea what you are referring to. If you have a periodontal problem and you have a tooth removed then yes a pocket could get deeper on an adjacent tooth or the gum could recede to accommodate the loss of bone as the socket heals.

Regarding the dizziness and lightheaded symptoms you are having... that could be a temporary inner ear thing that was brought on by a sudden or extreme movement of your head. It could be due to some inflammation in the sinus .... you should make the dentist aware of this if it does not improve.

just one other thing, i had this root took out and a upper tooth extracted on monday, its thursday evening now what are my chances of dry socket, unfortunately i gave in have smoked this evening, the empty socket looks a tiny bit smaller and there a whitish kind of colour in there, i know dry sockt on upper jaw is rare-ish, but this is me and thats my kind of luck!!!!:)

I'm sorry but I really cannot help you if you are going to smoke because you know that is going to have a negative affect on how the oral surgery heals. The likelihood of a dry socket is HIGH irrelevant of which arch the extraction was done if you smoke.
