Neuropathy and methylenation link?

HI All,
I will be seeing a new doctor soon. I am trying to figure out the right questions to ask when I see her. I have demyelinating polyneuropathy . I did a nutrition/ metabolic panel which revealed a methylenation problem. After reading on this forum I began taking methy-b12 on an empty stomach for the past month or so to correct b12 which was around 300. I don't think it was low enough to be the cause of the acute neuropathy but it may have been a contributing factor. The panel revealed iron, D and riboflavin deficiency and many insufficiencies which I hope to have corrected. There appears to be a malabsorption problem of some sort. I have gone gluten free and low oxalate and have noticed some improvements. I am still getting relapses despite the changes. I do notice they are less and my recovery is much faster. I plan on asking for an organic acid test. Is there anything else I should ask for. I don't understand methyenation fully so if there are any articles or insight to help me understand I would appreciate a point in the right direction.
Thank you

Spend some time on this site. I found it helpful in understanding how to correct folate and b12 issues. It can vary for each person on what works. And a B12 reading at 300 is low and can/will cause issues so it's good you're addressing it. It can take a long time for your body to heal depending on how long you've been running on a nutritional deficit.

Just what I was looking for. Thank you!

Marlene beat me to it!

Thanks Marlene;)

Welcome to NeuroTalk, February.

I suggest you also use methylated folic acid
Too. MetaFolin 800mcg daily. You can get this by
Solgar at I herb.com or from Amazon.com

If you have something interfering with
Nutrient absorption like Gluten intolerance,
Then avoiding offending gluten or other
Foods may help.

mrsD, Thank you. I have been B12 deficient 6 years that I know of, maybe more. I was sure that I had fixed it by taking hundreds of B12 vitamins, trying to get my number up to 1000 which is where it should be with the type of neuropathy I have. I switched to methyl b12 when I saw the post where you explained that many of us can't convert the non -methyl kind. I pulled medical records and there was a methylenation report showing that there was a problem which needed further investigation. All I was ever told, was to take a multi-vitamin. Since I could never tolerate muti's I let it go, not thinking it was a big deal. After looking into the site Marlene recommended, it connected many dots and clearly there's a problem which finally can be addressed and reversed. The MTHFR genetic page probably sends many away, as it did me, thinking they don't have it. I am going to get L-methylfolate today and start slowly as recommended. The knowledge that you both have generously shared is very much appreciated.

Sounds like a good plan...
Anyone can take the methylated versions.

So there is no reason not to.;)

I agree on taking the methyl forms too. The only time you have to be concerned with the methyl form of B12 is if your body can't handle a lot of it. Then you need to pay more attention to dosing and maybe alternate with other bio-active forms of B12. They explain all that on the website too.

At some point, I would be sure to add in a good B-complex. You need the other B vitamins as well.

I referenced Linus Paul. They recommend Fad, (B2) with metafolin. I have been using regular B2 for a while but haven't noticed a difference. They say deficiencies can cause burning hands and feet which I have bouts with. It would be amazing if the combination can help with the burning.

I was going to add a slow release niacin next.

I have been taking 10,000 units of methyl B12 daily to catch up. I thought it was water soluble and any extra would just flush through. Is that wrong?

I read about the other b12 you referred to and will have that on hand too.
Thank you

Good luck with your plan. Just remember that niacin is used to calm anyone who over methylates so if you are a solid under methylating person, niacin could gobble up the methyl groups supplied by the B12. So be sure to start at low dose to see how you react.

And yes, B12 is water soluble. Most of what you take is not absorbed that's why the higher doses.
