Neurodegenerative disease

I was diagnosed with ms 1974 now the current neurologist says I have neurodegenerative disease, which doing a search on it shows that it is an umbrella disease which ms is one. The neuro says I show different aspects of several diseases under this umbrella and he doesn't know how to treat it or what to label it.

Has anyone else been diagnosed with this?

I haven't but I just wanted to say welcome and I hope some one here can be of assistance.

Welcome, Bob-pa!

"Neurodegenerative disease" can cover a lot of disorders. I hope that the neuro is going to do some more testing in order to narrow this down to a specific disease--or more than one specific disease, maybe.

Sometimes neuros give out a general term because they haven't yet figured out what it is. But since you say you were already diagnosed with MS (in 1974!), I'm wondering why this neuro isn't going along with that diagnosis.

Is the idea that you should start all over again and possibly have the MS diagnosis reversed? Have you been living with MS since 1974? How have you been doing? Have you been on any of the MS drugs?

If you had an MS diagnosis but were always in remission since then, with no MS problems, I can see why the neuro would want to re-evaluate you, but if you've been a more typical person with MS, you've probably been coping with some symptoms and limitations, maybe even taking an MS drug or two.

Reconsidering your diagnosis after so many years is pretty radical, it seems to me. Have you asked him whether he thinks you don't have MS, after all? Or maybe he thinks you have another disorder in addition to the MS you already have?

if his report to you means he's going to do nothing, i'd get a 2nd opinion.
maybe he doesn't know but at least he could try to treat your symptoms.

Hi Bob and welcome to NeuroTalk. Are you a person of my age? I was
DXed in 1975/76.

What have your symptoms been over the years? Typical MS or not?

If I were you I'd ask him to send you to another Neuro for a 2nd opinion.
Or, after all these years with MS, just sit back and enjoy not having it..:D
