New to MP. Any help would be appreciated. Horrible Pain
 

I was diagnosed with MP six months ago. The pain started after a hard blow to my left thigh damaging the nerve. I went to a Nero specialist who told me that surgery, because of the severity in damage, that surgery would not be a option but that he could only help manage the pain. He prescribed me 300 mg of Gabapentin 3 times a day and Norco 3 times a day or when needed for pain. The combination of these drugs barely takes the pain away for maybe an hour or so. The pain comes back worse then before. Its constant and gets worse with the job I do. Some days its unbearable. Doing nothing hurts, walking hurts, sitting hurts, sleeping is impossible. Nothing seems to help. Anyone with ideas I am all ears. Thanks in advance.

I am a bit perplexed. Was just the LFCN damaged by the blow to your thigh or were more things involved?

If only the LFCN was damaged, I do not understand why surgery would not be an option but I would think it should be a last resort.

MP can resolve on its own in some circumstances. Your thigh may simply need more time for healing. Six months may feel like an unbearably long time but it is relatively short when speaking of MP. It takes time for the LFCN to heal.

I can appreciate your suffering as I have had MP for about 35 years. It can become debilitating.

There may be other reasons your doctor said that surgery was not an option.

MP alone can be treated in many different manners. The degree of damage and the duration of the MP have much to do with the determination of the best course of action for treatment.

As I mentioned, it could resolve on its own in time. (I know that does nothing to address the pain you are currently experiencing and how much you desire to alleviate the pain NOW, not wanting to wait for it to resolve on its own.)

Some treatment options are:

Physical therapy
TENS unit
Oral medications (your current method of treatment)
Pain patches
Injections of the LFCN (given in the abdomen)
Radio frequency ablation
Surgery (as a last resort)

Have oral medications been your only treatment to date?

I have only been on Gabapentin and Narco since diagnoses and went thru one set of injections. The pills maybe work for a hour or so and the injection worked for about a day and the back came back horribly. I read my post and I don't believe I worded it correctly. I was diagnosed 6 months ago with MP but I damaged my thigh a 1 year and a half ago but did not have insurance until recently so never went to doctor. The damage was caused by fighting a shoplifter and my thigh hit a concrete border. I didn't think anything of it until a few days past and this weird numb, burning/cutting feeling came from right thigh. I just dealt with the pain until after a year of it I could not handle it anymore. Went to Nero specialist and this is what he said. He could do surgery but the length of pain I had been in and the damage to the nerve he felt that the risks would out way the benefits. He tried the injections but after a day I returned to his office complaining that the pain had returned. He said that the pain I have is more likely permanent and that he could manage the pain. I contact my mom (nurse of 35 years) and she sent me to a Nero specialist that she knew and after a battery of test came to the same conclusion :(. Sorry so long but wanted to post entire history. Hope that's not to confusing.
