bit concerned
 

I don't usually mention my youngest, Noah, who is 3 but last weekend he had a fever and was very tired for a few days. I watched him but he was managing so I let him be. The night before he wet his bed, then yesterday his pants and tonight he woke to go pee and had a high fever again.

While my first fear was a UTI (he had one as a baby), I then realized he may have malaria and now I'm even more worried.

I'll take him to the doctor today but regardless ask prayer that he recover fully. Please and thank you.

do you live in an area where malaria is common?

How was your trip?

Well, after seven hours in emerg...we get to go back! However, I'm thankful to say his preliminary bloodwork is negative for malaria, UTI and diabetes though there are definite signs of infection but at this point its likely in keeping with viral. However, we have to repeat the testing today. Noah is NOT going to like that. the tech dug around for the blood which was painful. He'll be afraid today.

Noah would not stay awake there so it was obvious he was sick and his fever keeps returning.

My biggest concern tonight though is his jumpiness. At the hospital he started to get jumpy but I thought it had to do with the fever spiking. HOwever, once we got home he's done it more and more but the fever is gone with the meds. Anyway, as with all seizurey stuff, it is wait and see but it just leads me to wonder if the infection is in the brain.

Eyes, ears, throat etc were fine.

p.s. our trip was awesome. apart from the airports and suitcases, it was all excellent. seven countries in all, mostly europe and then india/sri lanka. We had family everywhere which was the best! now we just have to tackle the bills...!!! but it was worth it. We're homeschooling this year and they saw so much it makes things easier to teach with real life examples.

(((Hugs))) Two of Tom's last three seizures were febrile, at the start of a regular cold. My bet would be Noah's just good and sick, with a much-lowered seizure threshold, not a brain infection. Tom's last seizure was with a lovely stomach bug. I'm guessing the vomitting upset Tom's electrolytic / chemical balance? Not sure how well Noah's staying hydrated, and taking in more than water? Prayers he gets healthy quickly and the seizury stuff goes away.

Editted to add: With the vomitting, Tom started cycling sleeping in my lap, waking to spit up stomach bile, and then he would do a little chewing with his mouth (which always makes me wonder if it's seizury?), and back to sleep again. I finally gave him a dose of diazepam, our in case we're worried he might have a seizure medicine (as opposed to Diastat to stop a seizure). He threw up 10 minutes later, and then that was it. He was able to keep fluids down afterwards and I knew we were on the upswing. Maybe try giving Noah Diastat anyway... to kind of break the cycle?

The hospital did not seem too concerned with the jumpiness. Noah had one seizure afebrile as an infant but does not have epilepsy. We went back today for the repeat bloodwork. He still has a fever and is tired.

get this, dr. 1 said 'do bloodwork', dr 2 said do two sets 24hrs apart. dr. 3 said 2nd set should be minimum 48hrs later. then the tech comes in saying she would be doing draws every 6 hours for 48hrs.as per instructions by public health!!! I just said she should do the bloodwork then I was going home. They could call if they need to do more.

7hrs yesterday and 3.5hrs today. i'm tired.

thanks for the input. he is likely a bit dehydrated.

Thanks. it will take two weeks for final results on the malaria but i'm quite sure the preliminary tests ...all 3 of them... are accurate and that isn't the problem.

The doctors don't know why his WBC count went so high 25.6 day 1, 24.9 day two but then dropped back to 10.9 day 3 (thankfully). The only outward sign of infection by the third day in hospital was a mild double ear infection.

I didn't tell the story did I? day 3 they called me to repeat bloodwork due to high WBC and a positive blood culture (later determined to be a contaminant). After 9 hrs in the ER and two sets of bloodwork, they decided to admit him. They put in an IV line, did another blood draw, urine and chest xrays, only to decide two hours later to send him home on antibiotics instead. the ped. consulted with two infectious disease doctors and the lab at the children's hospital and they all felt he had improved enough to go home, assuming he'd have gotten worse if the blood culture was genuinely a problem.

So much fuss just to leave him with an ear infection.

He now has a cough and is sneezing so I doubt that ear will heal fully. He's still tired too but is otherwise good.

me on the other hand, I have some viral infection similar to scarlet fever if indeed it isn't that. Such a nasty rash and headache...

ERs are so great for sharing the wealth of germs around eh?
