How much to take?

Hi,

how much vitamin E, magnesium and acetyl L-carnitine would you advice to take?

I've got vitamin E (d-alpha tocopherol) 268 mg (400 IU), that's what it says.

Here is what I take at the moment:

Vitamin B12 (methylcobalamin) 1000µg on empty stomach
Vitamin B1 300 mg (3x100 mg)
Fish oil (has vitamin A, E and Ω3) twice daily
Magnesium ? need to get a better form
Acetyl L-carnitide – getting that one tomorrow

My issue is Neuro-muscular; nerves in my hands stopped supplying muscles and muscles wasted severely. I'm still undiagnosed (working on it), so cannot tell what exactly I have.

Pain in my hands got a lot better since I started taking the above; or maybe the one-time vitamin B12 shot my doc gave me helped also.

Fish oil does not have Vit A in it. (It is made from fish body oils and not the liver). It appears you have Cod Liver oil or something similar. This is not safe long term in high doses.
Therefore regular fish oil or krill is the one to take to get the high doses needed for inflammation.

You need a natural Vit E product that has all the forms of E in it, not just alpha. The gamma and other forms are useful as a group. 400IU is okay. Some E products with only Alpha are synthetic and I don't recommend those. Oils like E and fish oils are best taken with food.

Magnesium needs to be a chelate.... glycinate, citrate, gluconate, malate etc. OXIDE is not absorbed and therefore useless to get thru the intestines and into the blood to move to the rest of the body.

The acetyl carnitine starts at 500mg a day, and increase up to 1-2 grams say, weekly. Some people do well on just the 500mg a day.

A whey protein powder mixed in to a shake, is a good way to get protein that will build muscle. There are studies showing it works for lean muscle loss...to help strengthen and build them.
One serving a day should be enough to start. You can mix it into
yogurt, or whatever you want. (you can add flaxseed oil to it in this form, and that Omega 3 is helpful as well). Fruit, yogurt, some juice, and flax + whey protein make for a healthful drink.
You can make a chocolate one if you want even. ;)

Yes, it is cod liver oil. That's what you get when you live in a country whose language you do not speak or read fluently :D thank you mrsD!

My vitamin E is a mix of d-alpha tocopherol, d-beta, d-gamma, d-delta and d-alpha tocopherols. Would it get your approval? :)

I'm looking into whey protein powder, apparently they produce it locally here in Greece. But there are many different forms to choose from http://hellenicprotein.gr/english/index.htm

Do you think I could take creatine to get my proteins?

Cheers

Creatine is tricky.... I never could tolerate it. Creatine is only one thing...not proteins. Some whey powders have creatine added to them, however....It is best to get the plain whey powder if you can. Read the labels some have magnesium oxide added...which often causes diarrhea. I don't know about where you are though.
...
Creatine should not be taken if you have any lowered kidney functions.
Also it tends to cause cramping if you are not hydrated enough, or take too much. I never got past the lowest dose..:o:rolleyes:

The mixed tocoferols are fine. 400IU is all you need once a day.

If you already bought the cod liver oil, just take one cap a day.

To increase dosing use fish oil or Krill oils. Health food store sales people push that cod liver oil for some reason. Historically it was all people had in the "old" days, before fish oil was chemically developed from the fish bodies instead.

I've got magnesium citrate from MagAbsorb 150 mg - I think I will take 2x150 daily?

I've also got whey protein in "rich chocolate flavour" :) and with some L-cystein in it, and fish oil with vitamin E and omega-3 in it.

I will see what all of this will do for me..

and now..?

I wonder what to take now, with my newly diagnosed MMN ..

I doubt you are getting even 1/2 of your mag sups (sorry) as of the form it is, very hard for your body to absorb.
