Woke Up Numb

Hi all, I know I haven't post in a long time. How is everyone?
I woke up from a nap yesterday and the top of my foot was numb, I'm thinking it will go away soon. It never went away and I woke up today and my leg is starting to be numb just in the front of it. Now it is a little weak to walk on it.

The dr said just take it easy today and let them know if there is any change.
I want to know what is your experience with this problem?

Shadiyah, aren't you on Tysabri? It could be the start of an exacerbation or not,
but with Tysabri, I'd dbl check every sx that presents itself and gets worse and
doesn't go away in a day. You are testing for PML, aren't you?

Hope it's just a temp sx and will go away soon.

i would assess your sx's day by day and notify your dr if this doesn't resolve.
just keep calling the office back to leave your report. if a wk goes by and/or you're worse make an appt.

keep us posted.

Hi Shadiyah,

I'm having a problem with the abbreveations
sx = symptoms.

Many of us have been on message boards for a long time and we tend to forget not everyone understand the abbreviations that are used :)

Below is some information about Numbness and Multiple Sclerosis with links:

Quote:

Numbness and Tingling
Paroxysmal sensory disturbances, such as numbness or tingling (paresthesias), are a very common occurrence in MS. They range from minimal deficits, such as tingling in the extremities, to severe, such as complete numbness that disrupts functional tasks. http://www.unitedspinal.org/msscene/...e-and-they-go/

Quote:

Numbness of the face, body or extremities (arms and legs) is one of the most common symptoms of MS. Often it’s the first symptom experienced by those eventually diagnosed with MS. The numbness may be mild or so severe that it interferes with the ability to use the affected body part. For example, a person with very numb feet may have difficulty walking. Numb hands may prevent writing, dressing, or holding objects safely.

People with MS who have severe facial numbness should be very careful when eating or chewing, as they may unwittingly bite the inside of their mouth or tongue. People with numbness over other parts of the body should be careful around fires, hot water and other sources of heat, as they may suffer a burn without realizing it.

There are no medications to relieve numbness. Fortunately, however, most instances of numbness are not disabling, and tend to remit on their own. In very severe cases, a neurologist may prescribe a brief course of corticosteroids, which often can temporarily restore sensation.

I have dealt with numbness in various was many times. It's not pleasant but it's not the worst thing in the grand scheme of Multiple Sclerosis.

Not all symptoms or even exacerbations (relapse, attack, flare-up) can or should be treated with steroids. Steroids do not fix MS nor do the change the course of the disease. Steroids may help shorten an exacerbation but not always.

Steroids are used for acute exacerbations. Steroids have short term as well as long term serious side effects. The more steroids are used the less effective they become.

Try to relax, Shadiyah (I know, easier said than done)

If you have more questions please ask.

Don't be surprised if your doctors don't seem to care that you're numb.

That's the thing that I had a hard time wrapping my head around the first time I had something go numb. The fact that doctors don't see numbness as a serious symptom. It's not a serious symptom. It's uncomfortable, and to the person experiencing it. It feels like it's serious.

But, doctors don't see it that way, and a lot of times they forget that *we* don't know that. They don't tell us that we shouldn't worry about it. To us, it looks like they don't care. (the jury is still out on that one. There are times that I don't think my doctors give an <expletive> about me.)

Since numbness of my legs was one of my first big symptoms, well actually it was inability to move the legs when I was sitting or laying in bed, my doctor wants to know immediately if I have that kind of symptom

Let us know what happens and good luck. Could it be the stress of the holidays causing some temporary reoccurrence of a previous symptom

Thank you all for your replies. I have not been on the boards in a long time and that is why I'm not up on the latest abbreviations.

I've had numbness before lots of times like in my mouth which is happening right now. It's just when it started traveling up my leg from my foot I didn't know if I should bother my dr. Or not. He is very nice and always checks on me.

Anyway Saturday was the worst day and it started getting better. There is still numbness in my foot but my toes are now fine and I can walk regular now. This all started on Friday which was the day I spent hrs at the pain clinic to get my meds. I was there from 10am until 1pm.

But thank you so much you all are always such a help since day one of joining.

My left arm and hand are getting progressively more and more numb - makes me a petty lousy typing teacher :(
