Altering your gut bacteria could ease anxiety and depression

We know that the complex colonies of microbes that live in our guts affect our physical health - imagine trying to digest things without them - but new research now suggests that they also have a positive influence on the way we think.

Assessment of psychotropic-like properties of a probiotic formulation (Lactobacillus helveticus R0052 and Bifidobacterium longum R0175) in rats and human subjects.

Emerging evidence of a role for gut microbiota on central nervous system functions therefore suggests that oral intake of probiotics may have beneficial consequences on mood and psychological distress.

Probiotics include buttermilk, yogurt, some soft cheeses, miso, tempeh, kefir, kim chi, sauerkraut, some pickles.

Prebiotics include foods with fiber like bananas, berries, asparagus, garlic, onions, leafy greens, artichokes.

I had some probiotics that I was keeping in the fridge.
Somehow I misplaced the bottle and might have to
get to the store to replace them.

My mdoc has started talking about the importance of the
microbes in our gut. She esp likes talking about the numbers:

Quote:

The largest reservoir of bacteria resides in our intestinal tract, where we host about 100 trillion microbial cells and 1,000 microbial species.

...
If you tell grown-ups, "I saw a beautiful red brick house, with geraniums at the windows and doves on the roof...," they won't be able to imagine such a house. You have to tell them, "I saw a house worth a hundred thousand francs." Then they exclaim, "What a pretty house!"

I take a shelf stable one from garden of life called primal defense ultra ultimate probiotic formula.
It has a lot of good bacteria. 5 billion live cells per day and 13 species of beneficial cultures, I take it at night on an empty stomach.
I only take one, they reccommend 3 a day.
It is expensive.

I am back to taking my magnesium oxide 1000mg at night for regularity...the prescription stuff did not help. need to let the gastro guy know that.

Yes. That is what mdoc wants me on. She says the probiotic is important every day too.

She probably gave me some prescription stuff for a few days until she expected the probiotic to kick in but I have no idea where it is or even whether I picked it up.
