alternative medication to Lyrica
Well hello there!
this is all new to me, so i ask your patience please. My husband was involved in a motor bike accident in December 2013, he had massive impact on the right side of his body. further to this his right lower arm was broken and due to the plaster of paris being to tight, he had to have his arm removed!! together with the nerve damage from the impact and the phantom pains/feelings, he is on 600mg Lyrica a day. Can anyone advise me what other medication is out there other than Lyrica. Any assistance will be most welcome. thank you |

Hi, and welcome to NT!
I was put on Lyrica, for nerve pain, after an MVA. It did not work well for me. I had better luck with Tegretol (carbamazepine). No medication is without side effects, but Tegretol has been around for ages, so it's long term impact is known. As an older drug, available generically, it also has the advantage of being significantly cheaper. It's important to remember that newer replacement drugs aren't always superior. Drug companies push them because patent protection makes them far more profitable. Nerve pain is difficult to treat and your husband may have to try a few medications, before finding the one that is most effective for him. Should he come off Lyrica, it is important to taper down slowly, under medical supervision. Lyrica does create dependency. In terms of the phantom limb pain, has your husband tried mirror box treatment? All my best to you. It sounds like your family has been through a great deal. |
Hi,
I switched from neurontin to nortryptiline 25mg which is working better for me for nerve injury pain and leaves my mood more intact. Some people take both. Littlepaw |

Hi Carlociaglia, I agree with the above quotes from Hockey, but would like to add that I get some relief from neurological pain with Lidocaine Infusions and oral Ketamine coupled with Opiates. I hope your husband finds the right treatment soon, Dave. |
