I was on tegratol but my liver function tests became very high so was took of it . Annoying cause it worked on pain . Now all they will give me is baclofen . This just makes me feel drunk still getting shocking pains . I have pre op assessment for mvd in april although surgeon said he will do mvd even if mri is clear . I just want my life back.and to be able to ride my motorcycle again

Hi,

I haven't had an MVD and probably never will so I can't help you with that. But if you have throat pain then you should look up GPN (Glossopharyngeal neuralgia). There are different types of Neuralgia depending on where the pain is.
And it seems that sometimes these medications are worse then the pain with their side effects and ineffectiveness.
I hope that you are able to find some relief.
Jane

What to expect after MVD proceedure

Hi Anne,
I am very new to this sight, in fact I tried to make a post yesterday and not sure if it was even posted. I hope this one reaches you. My MVD was 13 days ago. I woke up in recovery, no MVD pain just post op pain and headache. Headache felt like a sledge hammer hit me on right side head, MVD was done on right side. Incision about 3-4 inches. Don't remember much as I was kept very comfortable with meds. Went home on day 3. Slight swelling on outside right side of face and numbness inside mouth, teeth, gums Make sure you have someone with you for at least 3 weeks. 1. To help make meals. 2, keep track of what meds you are supposed to take and when. I really didn't have an appetite and was nauseous, so I took nausea med when needed. When you eat try to include protein (it makes you heal faster). I hope that this helps. I have a list of must haves before surgery and would be happy to share if you want. I wish you the very best and if I can help please let me know. That is if I can learn how to manipulate this forum:)

Hi DarJ,
You will pick up how to navigate and Post, start new Threads, very quickly. I can do most things, and I am a real technophobe - first Smartphone, first tablet, first internet connection since dial-up.
You have already proven your experience is invaluable to another member, that's how this Forum works - we all need each other, and we all have something to impart.

Dave.

I have the exact same pain, nerve issues in the throat that hurts. ENT said it is Glossopharyngeal neuralgia. I think an infection set it off.

I had an MVD 4.5 years ago and have been pain free since then. The surgery DID give me my life back. Headaches and temporary loss of hearing in my right ear after surgery on the right side. My MRI did not show a problem but the surgeon found "multiple" blood vessels tangled around the nerve. His words exactly. Spent 1 day in intensive care and 2 days in a regular room at the hospital. Be prepared to wake up with a catheter. They neglected to tell my that part in my pre-op consultation. lol. Headaches lasted about 2 weeks and was back to work after 4 weeks. But yea have someone with you for a while when you get home. Oh and they will shave part of your head.

The best thing I ever did was having surgery....
