Breast mass...now what?

Dear Friends,
I know this is not a neurological issue but thought some of you who have any experience can throw your 2 cents in, as I have grown to know and trust many
of you.

Found a breast lump myself last week(a manual exam by my doc 3 wks ago found nothing.) Just had a mammo and ultrasound and it showed 2 masses, one on top of the other. They are telling me to go for a biopsy. I really don't want to panic or rush into anything and my gut instinct is, if they biopsy the mass and it is cancer, isn't that opening up the mass to let cancerous cells "escape"?

Just looking for advice on biopsies. As I sit here and research I am a bit overwhelmed at the amount of info but did see a site that said 80-85% of biopsies masses are benign. I will hold onto that piece of data!

Thanks for any advice.
D.

They biopsy them all the time. And I am told it doesn't really hurt much.

I'll be sending you positive thoughts, to get a benign result!

My relative had a malignant biopsy result, they scheduled her for surgery fairly quickly. Unless a person wants to look at other options..

All went well and she had follow up radiation sessions , all is clear since then 10 yrs after.

If you drink a lot of coffee cutting it out might shrink the masses.
I had a small lump appear and stopped coffee for awhile , mine disappeared.. just my anecdotal story..

I would suggest you request a second opinion on the reading of the biopsy. Ask your doctor to send it to two different pathology labs for readings.

Most biopsy results are benign as you mentioned so the risk of anything cancerous being spread through the needle tract is very small.

I believe that if a biopsy does yield bad results that the surgeons make it a point to surgically excise the tissue that surrounds the needle tract when they remove the mass.

Sorry that you have to go through this. Here's wishing you a clean bill of health.

Your anecdotal story reminded me when my mother (several years ago) felt a lump; she began using (Isopropyl)Rubbing Alcohol several times a day. It eventually disappeared. She was big on using this rub for many of her aches and pains as well.

Diandra,

I had the experience of my gyny felling a lump during my annual exam. He tried to do a needle biopsy. The needle wouldn't go through. The look on his face was a bit alarming.

My gyny sent me to a surgeon that did quite a few breast surgeries./biopsies. I went in for Same Day Surgery. The surgeon removed a benign tumor with several cysts wrapped around it. That was quite a few years ago. Nothing more serious ever came of it. Also, there was never any concern about cells escaping.

Thank you Marlene, I never would have thought to do that. You are helping me to be well informed, prepared for my biopsy appt March 28.
