Taking p5p for carpal tunnel, safest max daily dose? (and other questions)
Hey everyone. Ive been recommended p5p for my carpal tunnel. But I have a concern as I read this on longecity.org:
------------------- So, all my research on P5P indicates that it is supposedly without the risks of regular B6. However, I have just experienced the unfortunate effects of B6 toxictiy after just a few days on P5P. I have so far found 4 or 5 others who have had similar experiences. I took 50mg of P5P in sublingual form on day 1 and I experienced notable anxiety and irritation for about 4 hours afterwards. On day 2 I broke up the dose into two 25mg doses and noticed some mild anxiety after each dose. Day 3 I did the same and noticed a mild tingling in my left foot. Day 4 I dosed the same and noticed profound burning and tingling in both foot and my left hand. I stopped immediately. It's been about a week and the symptoms have intensified. Like I said, I've found only a few others who have experienced this from P5P but many of them are still suffering neuropathy months later. If I even eat a food that contains a small amount of B6 the neuropathy intensifies. Prior to this incident, I had occasionally taken a B50 vitamin (like twice per month) without any incident. I recall I took P5P about 2 years ago with no problems at all. The only thing I can think of is that I used the sublingual form this time. So far, the people I've found who experienced this have used either the sublingual or enteric coated form...perhaps missing the first pass through the liver has something to do with this. I'm not sure at all what to do at this point. I know that magnesium is a cofactor in the metabolism of B6 and I take about 400mg of it daily. From the others I've found who have experienced this, none have recovered. One reports minimal symptoms if they consume no B6 at all (including food) but even slight intake resumes all symptoms despite their blood levels being normal now. What the heck do I do now? --------------------------------- This gives me some concern. Can others share any feedback theyve had? What would be a safe maximum daily dose? Thanks! |
The use of B6 for carpal tunnel has never been really proven.
So if you don't like the effects, then don't use it. The very few reports in the literature involved people taking enormous doses (500mg a day and up) for a long period of time having paresthesias etc. It is highly unlikely you are having toxicity because historically those two factors had to be present. An enteric coated form will pass thru the liver. Only it will be more slowly, absorbed. Everything that goes thru your GI tract goes first pass thru the liver. Sublingual does not. B6 is used you know to TREAT people with pyroluria... and those people have terrible anxiety and mood issues relieved by the high dose B6. Make sure your magnesium is NOT oxide form. You could alter your dose, take it every other day or every 3rd day, etc. Or not use it all. Since you seem highly reactive, I think avoiding it would be the best course for you. |
Hi MrsD, thanks for the feedback.
That was not *my* experience, just an experience I read about. I have been taking 33mg capsules 1-2 times a day. I havent had any of those effects. But when I read about that guy's experience, it had me worried so I decided to post a question about it. My Mag is definitely not oxide. I take 400mg/day and it is chelated. Would you also recommend taking a balanced B vit supp like B50? I have read that b6 can inhibit the other forms of B. Thanks again! |
You could try the nice Jarrow product:
B-Right: It is less than a B-50, but more than a multivit. http://www.amazon.com/Jarrow-Formula...jarrow+b-right This mostly available online... iherb.com and vitacost etc and Amazon. Many people on our forums have used this with success over the years. It appears to be very gentle and not cause side effects like the '50s and 100's out there. Jarrow is an excellent company too. Beware of reading other people's problems on line...there are all sorts of different people with different lifestyles and genetic chemistry...no one is like the next so horror stories abound and may not pertain to you at all.
