Nortriptyline and morphine successfully relieves chronic neuropathic pain
Has anyone had experience with this combination?

Doing fairly well with morphine, Gabapentin, and Baclofen, despite severe and progressive small and large fiber neuropathies. I have been on this combination for several years.

Thanks Susanne.
Does morphine specifically help NP? I am curious how it compares to oxycodone or hydrocodone. |
I don't think it is better than the others, the only opiate found to work better for neuropathy pain is methadone, but it requires special oversight and scares a lot of doctors. There is an article about it in this months's Practical Pain Management. I do have oxycodone for breakthrough pain.
Since my neuropathy is permanent and progressive I will likely be on pain medication for the rest of my life. My PCP sat down with my husband and me to discuss the options. We needed something that could go up if necessary and that wouldn't be too expensive if our health insurance changed down the road. The MS Contin was the simplest and less expensive solution and is working so far. BuTrans patches were mentioned, but are really expensive. I would consider them if this stops working after a while. Also, the MS Contin is time release and most doctors prefer that you be on something like this round the clock rather than the ups and downs of other types. They are supposed to be less abusable as well, though this is controversial. |
