Has anyone ever tried or heard of Amantadine?
Hello all,
I've been suffering from pcs for 6 months now, hit my head why back in October 2014 playing football in my friends backyard. Been changed ever since. My symptoms are: Disconnection/unreal feeling to the body, depression, anxiety, and head heaviness. These symptoms are killing me, I've learned to live my life with them buts a drag. (I'm sure you all feel the same) Anyway, this medication is claiming to report a significant decrease in symptoms and improves reaction time and memory. This medication is used for pcs patients who aren't finding any improvement in symptoms by mental and physical rest. Link: http://www.momsteam.com/amantadine/c...ssion-syndrome (I can't post links so you have to copy and paste it and get to the article from there) Let me know what you guys think. If this is actually working and a significant remedy for my symptoms, I would take it asap lol. Sam |
Amantadine has been discussed previously. Some have even tried it. It appears helpful for some but of no value for others. If I remember correctly, for some of those it helped, once they stopped using it, some or all of the improvement was lost.
If your doctor will give it a try, it might be worth it. |
I used it for about a week. It seemed to improve my tolerance to mental activity, but it also killed my ability to sleep soundly and deeply, which cancelled out any benefit.

Hey mark!
Thanks for replying. So what your saying is this medication doesent really work that effectively? Dang, that stinks cause I was really considering telling my doctor but I'm not sure if it's worth it based on that most people aren't seeing that great of results? |
That is not what I said. I said "It appears helpful for some but of no value for others. If I remember correctly, for some of those it helped, once they stopped using it, some or all of the improvement was lost."
You can not average 'helps some, no help for others.' Concussion effect the brain differently for different people. Your injury may be of a type that Amantadine helps or it may not. But, others have had sleep difficulty side-effects, too. The key point is it does not appear to facilitate healing but rather treats symptoms while it is being taken. Some have found Ritalin helps with their symptoms but Ritalin definitely does not support healing. So, remember, there is a difference between reducing symptoms and promoting healing. So far, there is no drug that has been shown to promote healing directly. Reducing symptoms can help with healing as the reduction in stress and anxiety creates a healthier environment for the brain to heal. |
Oh I see now,
I must have misread what you said before my apologies. I'm going to talk to my doctor about Amantadine and what are his thoughts on the drug are. I'll make sure to post on this thread or maybe another one of what medication im going to be trying. I won't be able to see my concussion specialist for a couple weeks due to being he his on vacation. Once again, if you or anyone is curious on how it goes I will post a thread about it! |

Hey Aaron! Thank you for the reply. So how are you symptoms since you started taking Amantadine? Did it help with those at all? |
I used it - twice. Once for a year. I found it helped fatigue and get up and go (motivation, lethargy, functioning, etc.) but i finallt stopped due to night waking. It it thought to increase your dopamine level - neurotransmitter - which can be compromised after tbi. It may also promote neuroplasticity.
Currently trying concerta....resisted for a long time because i am not a drug lover :) I think it helps fatigue ...low dose 18 mg a day. I was desparate after a bad setback (overdid it badly for a few days during a legal process.... Good luck!! Improvement can be fast or slow. Must always focus on going forward!!!! |
Hey guys,
So I made this thread about a month ago. I am now on Amantadine :). I just started it wednesday, so far I have not seen any improvements just yet. Can take up to a week or two before i start to see anything. Wish me luck, Sam |
Back when I had my injury my Doctor refused to give this to me as it's off label :(
Hope you make progress, keep us updated! |
