I started a high fat diet to see if it helps

I've begun ketogenic (high fat) diet to see if there is any improvement before I decide to go for conventional treatment. The treatment options are- a round of steroids or a 3 month trial of Plaquenil or antibiotics and antifungals prescribed by a lyme dr. I have been living in this body full of neuropathic pain for 9 months now and I need to do something. I have been wanting to try this extreme diet for a while but as a holistic health counselor I do not believe in going on extreme diets. My belief is farm to table food, mostly veg, nuts, seeds, legumes, rice, fruit, bone broths, and small amounts of sea creatures and meats almost as a condiment.
I will be doing a science project on myself and will update you all on the progress. I have nothing to lose. I am not drawn to lots of fats, so this will be strange for me. Also, I eat a lot of fruit and will have to only ear low glycemic fruits in small portions. Low fat vegetarian or vegan diets do not work for me because they throw me into pretty bad hypoglycemia and paleo is too much meat and that doesn't work for me either, so I am pretty curious to see how this works.

Good luck. This is essentially what I'm doing as well, and it was a big change for me. After the initial "oh crap I can't eat that either!" period, I've adjusted pretty well.

Is it Atkins?

If it is, it took about 4 days for my body to switch from glucose to fat for fuel. The fat was melting from me. It must not be Atkins as fruit was my Achilles heel and tripped me up. Are you talking cherries? Thanks Ken in Texas.

No it isn't atkins. I am not looking to lose weight, just to see if this diet helps my neuropathy and apparent autoimmunity.

Luckily nuts do have a lot of good fats, and you say you enjoy those. You seem to know your stuff, but if I were trying this, I'd probably eat tons of avocados and olive oil (more than I already do even).

Good luck.

If you have Lyme Disease, it is highly recommended that you avoid steroids. Google Lyme and Steroids, there is tons of info.

My neuropathy is from Lyme and I find staying completely away from sugar, in ALL forms, and stay away from simple carbs works best. I have just been on a raw vegan diet for 4 wks and decided to try a just a few bites of a brownie and I could feel neuropathy ramp up.

I also drink 2 ounces of wheatgrass a day and do large glasses of green veggie juice to keep my system alkaline. I have cycled on and off this diet for many yrs as it is hard to maintain in winter and during stressful times in life. However, I feel best on it.

Keep us posted how you do on the high fat diet. I use avocado for a good fat.
It can be mixed into shakes.

Best of luck.....feel better!

Hi Diandra,
I am very worried about the steroids if its lyme, so I would probably go for the plaquenil first. It would be interesting to see what would happen with it because it is often used for lyme anyway.
If this diet can heal me, maybe I won't have to find out.
I am trying to stay as alkaline as I can with it, by maintaining the majority of what I eat to be dark greens and cruciferous veg. I miss the fruit though... apples, oranges, pears, melons!

If you have been tested positive for lyme, by reputable lab, taking steroids against any infection is pretty dangerous, as you virtually have no immune system against infection, so its much more severe, symptoms.
