Auto Accident & PCS

A little over a month ago I was rear ended by a vehicle going about 40. I was stopped. I went to the ER and was sent home with a concussion. Long story short, I've been experiencing memory issues, slow reaction time (I rear ended someone today) mood issues, can't find the right word, mixing words up etc. Ive had a CT and MRI and they were both normal. Since that accident I have rear ended someone else. It was low speed with minimal damage but I can't help from believing slower reaction time contributed to that one. I have stopped driving as a result of this.
I've been trying to get into a Neurologist but am having trouble (Obamacare)
If this is post concussion syndrome should I just tough it out?

NCGuy,

Welcome to NeuroTalk.

Your symptoms sound like concussion symptoms. There is no such thing as successfully toughing out a concussion. You only delay recovery.

Most generic neuros are not much help with concussions. You need to find the right doc, neuro, physiatrist, sports med, etc. I suspect you will be involved in a legal action with the driver. Maybe an attorney can direct you to the best concussion and whiplash docs in your area. Not to scare you, but I suggest you prepare for a long recovery because there is diagnostics that will help you protect yourself. Most concussions (85%) recover in the first 2 months. Those that don't can become long term issues.

Read the sticky at the top about Vitamins. It has good links to resources. Read about concussions and legal issues at www.tbilaw.com and www.subtlebraininjury.com

In the mean time, you need to get quiet rest. Not just sleep but low stress living. Try to keep a normal sleep schedule and don't push during the day. No drinking, minimal caffeine, healthy eating, and quiet environment usually helps.

Feel free to ask anything. Lots of good experience here.

My best to you.

I agree don't tough it out, as a survivor of a MVA in Jan. with mTBI in addition to other injuries I am still on disability due to the issues I am having. Find a specialist for concussive syndrome in your area. Tricia (retired RN and Prof.)
