The Cholesterol Myths

WHen I was involved in the chapter meetings of Weston A Price here in our city, I remember being given a leaflet on this book. That was about 10 yrs ago when I became so consumed with this cholesterol business:

The idea that too much animal fat and high cholesterol are dangerous to your heart and vessels is nothing but a myth. Here are some astonishing and ...

At the bottom of this site, and after the books the author lists 9 Facts on Cholesterol. I hadn't seen that as I didn't go past the books.

PS: There are many books available NOW on this subject, amazon carries them all.

These are the two my MD started testing with blood labs about 3 yrs and both were elevated. So I'm working now going on 3 yrs lowering these levels.

She's not concerned about cholesterol and neither am I. My numbers in the cholesterol lipids are pretty good.

I don't know if the conventional MD's test these two, but a friend who is now dealing with afib and going to a new heart MD is asking for these two tests be done.

Some yrs ago I bought the book The Heart Revolution and it's all about homocysteine being the culprit to heart disease NOT cholesterol.

Cardiovascular disease is a very complex condition.

Its risk factors (both negative and positive) include genetics, environmental effects and complex interactions between the two. That means that there is no single "magic bullet" treatment for it (changes in cholesterol or homocysteine levels or anything else for that matter).

Focusing on environment risk factors:

Negative risk factors include smoking, being overweight, inadequate exercise, excessive consumption of saturated and trans fats, excessive alcohol consumption, high plasma cholesterol levels and low levels of HDL.

HDL is interesting in this context. Its job is to remove excess cholesterol from the body, sending it to the liver where it is disposed of (this is a process called reverse cholesterol transport). High HDL levels are protective against cardiovascular disease.

There is a discussion of these issues, and others, here; http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-c...-20046388?pg=1.

Thinking back to my parents lives and they ate everything -- fats, dad drank alcohol (too much), sugars (I don't recommend that) and I don't know if they ever had testing back in their days for cholesterol. The word was never mentioned... They both lived into 90's, they did NOT smoke.

Thought I'd add this here and I still believe it's a myth on the cholesterol fear. Every now and then I go into "fear factor" after an MD does tests and comes back with this negative marker and that negative marker. But shake myself out of the fear.
