Coconut Oil and Tooth Decay

http://www.naturalhealth365.com/food...oth-decay.html

I've been using CO for probably 10 some yrs and have not had dental issues in all these years. OPC's are doing a good job too in my mouth.

caroline2 07-05-2015 04:27 PM

Here is one receipe for CO toothpaste. It's not the one I use, but it's online, I make up mine with MSM as there are MSM toothpastes I've used and I do use MSM for pain reduction in my body.

Caroline,
Is your TP similar to this one described in the link? What msm do you use? About how much? Why do you use it?

I have done a variety of things over the years. Right now, I use Biotene most days and a tiny bit of baking soda and water a few days a week. Need to get back into the groove again. I don't like Flouride either.

caroline2 07-16-2015 02:07 PM

Reading other online TP receipes, I added a fair amount of baking soda (non aluminum) to my mix yesterday and omgoodness, talk about cleaner/smoother teeth. I will do this with future batches and just ordered a new supply of "pure" baking soda.

The merits of CO continue to come to my attention daily. From the mouth to dementia.

Every time I run low on my home made CO toothpaste, I notice such a negative difference in my mouth health. I just made up another fresh batch yesterday and know this is the best way for mouth and dental health. Base of CO, MSM powder (optional) red mill baking soda and drops of clove oil is what I use for my toothpaste.

My dear 18 yr old grandgirl let their dentist use fluoride gel bath on her beautiful teeth and she's ended up with dental fluorosis....if you ingest fluoride, that will do it... I could say more but I better stop. What it does to teeth, think about what it's doing to our bones.

Bryanna 09-14-2015 01:58 PM

caroline2,

I agree that fluoride should be avoided as it is a by product of toxic waste and has no healthy benefit in the human body. However, you cannot get dental fluorosis from occasional topical applications of fluoride at the dentists office. I am not condoning the topical applications... I'm just saying the person has to be using or ingesting more fluoride than that to end up with fluorosis. Another way for a person to have fluorosis is if they ingested fluoride via their water, food, vitamins, or meds as a young child. And that goes for a pregnant woman who ingested those things as she would then pass the fluoride onto her fetus.

Bryanna, maybe my daughter and grandgirl didn't tell me the whole story on just how many fluoride baths the dentist has been doing. I know they are fanatic about NOT drinking tap water as it was fluoridated in 2009, so maybe they didn't tell me everything. They know how holistic I am...she definitely has mild to medium fluorosis.

Bryanna 09-14-2015 04:08 PM

caroline2,

The topical fluoride used on kids in the dental office is given at the cleaning appts. So the most she would have had it would be twice a year if that. I still don't condone that.

Unless, she was using the fluoride in trays at home? Some dentists recommend them when a child has poor oral hygiene or braces. Using that amount of fluoride daily in the trays will cause fluorosis.

Oh she went thru the braces, so MAYBE that is what she was dealing with doing "F" at home....grrrrrrrrrrr

They don't tell me everything and they shouldn't and I don't want to know everything but when she showed me her beautiful teeth last Dec I was shocked and I let it be known. My daughter got upset with me for some time .. I guess she took it personal that she was negligent. I was bashing the "F" industry. Thanks....

caroline2 03-12-2016 12:54 PM

Bumping up...I continue to be amazed at the wonderful benefits of making my own Coconut Oil toothpaste...I brush with soft brush probably 3 times per day and virtually no plaque build up. I haven't done a professional cleaning in about 3 yrs now. Believe I've done my share of those harsh cleanings. Just what works for me.

caroline2 03-17-2016 03:13 PM

This ingredient in commerical toothpaste was brought to my attention about 15+ yrs ago and I started to leave the commercial TP world and went to health food TP's...and then starting shopping online for supps.

I know of two SLS free toothpastes. My friend uses Tom's of Maine SLS Free
http://www.tomsofmainestore.com/cate...paste-sls-free

I've used many of Tom's over the years but before I started making my own I was using Weleda Calendula Sulfate free TP.

It seems Sulfate is used in many TP's but here are a couple I know of.

Bryanna 03-19-2016 04:37 PM

caroline2,

As always, thanks for the alternative information.

Have you read the ingredients in Tom's toothpaste? It contains ingredients (other than fluoride) that are not considered to be necessary or healthy for our gums and teeth. I think sometimes people see the term "natural" or "free" of something like fluoride and assume the product contains useful ingredients.

If someone is concerned about the ingredients in their toothpaste, then as you have mentioned making your own toothpaste with a few key ingredients would be ideal. Things like coconut oil, baking soda and essential oils are all therapeutic and won't hurt our gums, teeth or digestion if swallowed.

Thanks, Bryanna

Oh Bryanna, I know Toms isn't totally free of the nasties...but I was looking at the SLS issue and thought I'd bring that up.

I continue to make my own and don't want to go back to the bought brands. I just made up a nice batch today and as long as I have the time and will to do it, I'll continue to make my coconut oil base TP. The proof for me is in the health of my mouth after a long life of dental issues. C

ono8ono 03-19-2016 08:56 PM

Both Tom's SLS-free toothpaste contain GLYCERIN; glycerin form film over teeth and prevent saliva to remineralize teeth enamel. So not a good choice.

I notice Crest recently stop using glycerin in most of their tooth paste which is a big surprise to me but Colgate still using glycerin in their products.

Best is to make my own toothpaste.:D

Dr. Mercola on CO Toothpaste use:

caroline2 04-30-2016 01:55 PM

Bumping up as reminder. I truly believe CO toothpaste could keep so many from dental issues. I've had plenty of dental work in my life and if I knew then what I know now, perhaps I wouldn't have had all the issues I dealt with. Grape Seed Ex is incredible for gum and teeth health also. I knew none of this back in my dental problems life. CO tp is keeping my teeth and mouth healthy. No dental visits for me in about 5 yrs. I know this sounds outrageous to many, but I'm happy not to go ... just saying and sharing.

caroline2 11-06-2016 02:42 PM

I continue to enjoy great dental health with my dental program I've listed in this thread. No dental visits in years. No problems. But I've had my share in my long life. Wish I had known all this years ago, but as they say: When the Student is ready, the Teacher will appear. I wasn't ready for the Teacher years ago, I guess.

caroline2 04-29-2017 06:44 PM

I've been gone for about 5 months on a knee issue and in hospital two times and three rehabs....long long long story.

All the time I was gone I NEVER was without my jar(s) of coconut oil. Many of the nurses especially from the philippines have been using CO all their lives.

caroline2 10-28-2017 01:07 PM

Well, I just proved something I didn't plan to prove. I didn't use CO Toothpaste for the last couple nights and just used my health food store toothpaste and found plaque/tarter building overnight. I needed to make a new batch and was a little lazy. CO Toothpaste is the only way to go. For ME for sure.

For those who don't want to make up their own Toothpaste, I just bought this tube to try a brand and it is really nice. I like Now Foods products a lot anyway. I now combine my own and some of this one from the tube.

Now Foods, Solutions, XyliWhite, Toothpaste Gel, Coconut Oil, Mint Flavor, 6.4 oz (181 g) - iHerb.com

Well, I know what I'm doing is working, keeping me out of dental offices and keeping my mouth in good order. I'm into 8 yrs of no dental visits.

I continue with cutting way back on refined carbs and SUGAR and love love love not going to dentist.

I've done my share in my early years when I was not very smart ... it takes years of issues to wake up. I'm 80 now...and going into 24 yrs with grape seed extract that keeps my gums healthy.
