Leaky Gut Syndrome (common in autoimmune)

I just happened on to a program called the Stem Cell Show and they had a functional MD aka integrative MD I'd say on the show. The functional MD said the common denominator for autoimmune conditions is Leaky Gut. I've heard this term for many moons but have kinda ignored it. I've been told I had Hashi years ago and I think it's under control now.

The functional MD said to start on your own to eliminate as best as one can gluten, dairy and sugars.

I'm sure most of you all here know this, but I thought I'd mention it. I've eliminated all bread and pasta in my life. Gluten as best I can. And sugars a lot.

There are supps to help with this Leaky Gut Syndrome...I forget what she said....I was trying to absorb so much in my memory bank.

This link and references therein may assist members in drawing their own conclusions about the validity of Leaky Gut Syndrome as a medical diagnosis; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leaky_...cite_note-qw-6 .

Certain segments of the celiac community--

--have been discussing this for some time, with "tight junction dysfunction" between the cells of the intestine mediated by the chemical signaller zonulin.

Thanks for that glenntaj.

I had not heard of zonulin before - it is very interesting.

This free access paper discusses it well http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3384703/ .

As far as I can see that knowledge has not yet led to new therapeutic insights into management of auto-immune diseases.

It isn't just the alternative practitioners that think this anymore.
I'm not a doctor, I'm a holistic health coach. I've taken many classes and listened to many lectures on this topic (taught by medical doctors). The idea of sibo it is not just alternative anymore. There is amazing research being done and discovered on this topic.

I would recommend for anyone here to at least try a gut healing protocol because it definitely wouldn't hurt and it helps some people tremendously.

Unfortunately I have not been able to resolve my issues with diet, but at the same time, I am not sure what condition I would be in if I ate the standard american diet. I feel certain that the foods I eat are fighting back what ever has triggered/is causing this.

Healthgirl, thanks for those links.

There is increasing evidence that differences in the kinds of bacteria which live in the gut (the gut microbiome) are causally linked to many physical and mental health issues.

My impression is that this is still at the "basic science" stage - ie, people are still trying to work out the details.

Depending on how the details turn out, procedures which change the gut microbiome could well be beneficial.

Leaky Gut Syndrome? Why are people not being prosecuted for fraud?

Gut Microbiome? Scientists stating the obvious that Mother Nature knew all along. Unfortunately, due to Lansoprazole, Metoclopramide and my cocktail of other meds, I have 1 bacterium left, an overworked little chap called Fred. He is very lonely.

Dave.

Thats exactly right. This science is exciting and promising but still in its infancy. Fortunately using food as medicine can't hurt so it is always worth a try for everyone.

On the microbiome...
They have done successful fecal transplants for people with c diff and have had good results. Literally just by putting someone's healthy poop into another persons butt:yikes:

kiwi33 07-13-2015 10:51 PM

Healthgirl, yep, foecal transplants for C. difficile infection are a success story - about 90% effective.

Talking more with others today and I posted on Vits/Supps area today. I've been taking DGL now for 3-4 yrs and thought, does it help with leaky gut. And sure enough there are links about this connection. Besides this one, there are others.
