Help needed

Hi all,

I went to the doctors just for a basic checkup as it's been a few years. I've put on about 8kgs in the last year and my diet has been terrible. Takeaway, lollies, soft drink. But I don't drink alcohol.

Anyway I have been feeling quite tired but put it die to work, 4 kids and a husband. We just built a new house and moved in about 3 mths ago.

Anyway my dr thought to test for coeliac which I thought was weird but the results came back:
Deamidated gliadin peptide IgG - 4 U/ml (<15) so that was ok

Total IGA - 2.62g/l (0.4-3.50) normal

Transglutaminase IgA 41 U/mL (<15) - not normal

In addition my iron levels are low with the worst being serum Ferritin <8 ug/L (15-165)

He now wants me to do a Bowel biopsy

Just confused with what this means?

Any help would be appreciated.

All other bloods were fine

Well--

--it sounds like it's time to go gluten free, if you haven't already. (I sort of suspect that by posting in this section you sort of suspected that as well.)

The Transglutaminase IgA assay, at least in the presence of normal levels of IgA, is the most specific blood test for frank celiac in that it it the one most associated with villious damage, which is why the bowel biopsy is warranted, given that findings of villious damage on biopsy is the gold standard of celiac diagnosis.

I'd argue, though, with that Transglutaminase IgA result you really wouldn't need to go through the biopsy, unless it is needed for confirmatory insurance purposes (such as getting subsidies for gluten-free foods).

And yes, low iron/ferritin levels are very much a concomitant sign of possible celiac--your system is likely not absorbing many of the nutrients you take in, bad diet or not.

Thanks so much for your reply. The reason I was posting was to see if maybe it maybe something else. I think I may be in denial. My current diet is mainly all gluten and the thought of having to go off it is extremely daunting.

I suppose I need the biopsy to be done so I know 200% for sure - it is probably the only thing that will make go gluten free.

I don't seem to have the normal systems - other than tiredness and short term memory being an issue nothing else seems to worry me. The 8Kg I out on I thought may have something to do with my brother passing away suddenly last year but I'm now thinking this may have triggered the coeliac? So I could be in the early stages??

Thanks again for your feedback as it's very much appreciated.

Hi Pennodream,
My doctor wanted me to try a gluten-free diet to see if it had any effect on my facial pain/headaches. It was all very confusing for about two weeks, but I wanted to let you know that it hasn't been bad at all. It just takes some getting used to. I don't feel like I'm starving or missing out on anything. I've been finding new recipes and I feel that my diet is a lot healthier than it used to be.
If you're going to have a biopsy, don't go gluten free until after the procedure or it will alter the results.
Good luck with everything, Cheryl

I just went to the specialist and he said based on the blood test I have a 50/50 chance of being diagnosed and they are doing the biopsy to confirm. They are also doing a colonoscopy to confirm its not bowel cancer due to my low iron levels. I'll definitely know in a few weeks!

Good luck with your testing.

Hubby and I eat a lot of non-gluten foods: lots of rice, some potatoes.
We do buy Gluten Free soy sauce and usually keep a frozen loaf
of Udi's GF millet bread in the freezer.

For folks who are sensitive it is good to get rid of the old teflon pans, cutting boards,
and clear out silverware drawers and toasters where bread crumbs might be hanging out.
